Games Blamed For Montreal Shooting
September 16th, 2006 by Kevin Cortez in BusinessLast Wednesday, 25 year old Kimveer Gill went on a rampage at Dawson College in Montreal. Thursday night, 2 of the people he shot were announced dead, while 6 were left in critical condition. After the shooting occurred, Kimveer Gill shot himself to death during a standoff with authorities. Once again, the media has blamed video games for the inspiration of a shooting.
On ABC World News, Charles Gibson has stated the following about the Montréal shooting: “We learn today that the gunman was obsessed with extremely violent videogames.” Another ABC reporter stated “Studies continue to link violent, sexually-charged games like Grand Theft Auto with increased aggression. But the gaming industry has used the First Amendment to win most legal fights.” ABC news also stated how certain games such as Postal 2: Share the Pain and JFK: Reloaded can be downloaded, avoiding retail.
You can view an interview with the creator of Super Columbine Massacre RPG! (Which was said to be a favorite game of Gill) here.

Well, who else are they gonna blame? Movies? That’s too old-fashioned, blame the games.

Everything gets blamed on games EVENTUALLY.

Anyone ever see his VampireFreaks.com profile? I’m pretty sure video games can’t mess someone up as bad as he was. He had about 20 surveys filled out all pointing to him being suicidal and homicidal.

Sure, take all gamers as murderers for the actions of few…
Maybe he loved violent video games because he was already a violent person, instead of loving violence because of video games as all these “studies” suggest. There are plenty of good people who play violent video games. To take from the ideas of the Michigan judge who shot down their violent video games bill, one could argue these games allow people to blow off steam as well.

I have little sympathy for this guy, regardless of how bad his life sucked. Lots of people have problems and don’t react this way. You can’t always choose your circumstances, but you can choose your reaction.
I also don’t think you can blame video games, although I do think in general, pop culture has desensitized people to the fact that hurting others is wrong and that violence is not amusing. Still, people who have been raised appropriately should have what they need to be grounded anyway.
Violent video games are fun, I enjoy shooting people in games. It certainly hasn’t and wouldn’t occur to me to shoot anyone in real life, unless they are breaking into my house and potentially endangering my family.

Same old. Yeh, games actyualty do have some contribution to this sort of thing, but reallly, it’s not the fundemental element that drives off border individuals to the extreme sort of expression that this young fellow expounded… he is actually his own publisher and noone else truly is.
Period. Nuf Said.
Asides from what a asshole… i.e. his pain isn’t anyone elses, so why share??!??

Always the games….

Yeah, we have this president who goes on TV and says things like “it is ok to kill people that stand against us” yet its the videogames which are setting an example to kill. Just because this individual had a game at his disposal among the other things he collected is not proof enough. May as well blame television and the media for bringing him the initial images of columbine and the printing press, that damned printing press, we always knew it would cause a problem- they should ban newspapers and maybe they should just ban life as well. I won’t be happy until they ban your eyes your ears and your sense of touch- well, that’s before they start banning thoughts and certain looks. I heard they are working on banning certain strands of DNA- how about that? They should ban the electrons which form radio frequencies, not just the radio itself. Then we will be safe from each other.

Uh oh, Not video games again!

[...] While I agree that games like Super Columbine Massacre are in extremely bad taste, I find it hard to believe that games were the sole reason that this guy did what he did. It’s very clear from his blog that he was seriously messed up, regardless of what games he played. These kind of incidents certainly don’t help the gaming industry’s reputation, though.(full story) [...]

Ugh. I hate when people blame violence on video games.
“Yes, GTA made me kill those people” Good god, people are prepared to use any media that contians a trace of violence to further their “argument” that it makes kids kill people.
Those kids are fools, I mean, “Yeah, the gun kills people in the game- So it obviously must make people happy in the real world!”.

Did you ever stop to think that he could be a political activist? I thought one of the articles said Canada was just about to loosen up on gun control laws. A spectacular, gory senseless shooting like this would definately have an impact on the way people voted on that. Then, the anti gun people could also villify heavy metal and video games. They would shoot a few people to stop looser gun control laws from allowing a great many more people to be killed in the long run. I don’t think that that is all right, by the way. That was just an idea that leapt into my mind upon reading the articles about this. I mean, think about it. His own mom could not imagine him doing this. And he filled out so freaking many incriminating things on the internet, it was like he was carefully deciding what impression to give the public before he committed the crime. If you were about to do something horrible like that would you really risk getting caught beforehand by bragging your butt off about it like that? And would you work in a way to blame your favorite rock stars and video game makers so that the public would hate & ban them? Hmmmm. Something to think about.

Yes blame the videogames cause we have nothing else to do or say so we pinpoint it on the generation .. violent games have been round for quite a long time now and how do they know it was because of that anyways . alot of people in the world play violent games on a regular basis and 95 pecent of them do not get affected for one reason COMMON SENSE .. if more people had it then this guy in particular (if the alleged videogame was invovled) would have thought to himself that common sense knows that you cant do that in real life .. THATS WHY ITS CREATED IN A GAME jesus if everyone really wanted to be like a game .. then im sorry there is no medical way you could polygonise youself .. get the point yet?

How did he get a gun in the first place? People shouldn’t be allowed to have weapons in their homes in the first place
October 5th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
U tell them Kaiser Soze!
October 7th, 2006 at 12:20 am
Because Kaiser Soze (Not all are like this) But because its america so theres nothing new there
October 7th, 2006 at 10:24 am
Taylor: Does that mean you would wish that guns shouldn’t be allowed? Personally I think the only ones allowed guns in the public should be the police. As far as I know, at least two of the school massacres have happened with weapons found at home. A total ban of handguns would definitely reduce the numbers of murders
October 7th, 2006 at 2:19 pm
well in one point yeah thats exactly what im saying . the police are as currupt as the people they work for and im not pinpointing america either thats everywhere
October 10th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Well, even with corrupt police, it’s still nice to know that nobody besides them is carrying a gun.

LOL you wouldnt be saying that if a couple currupted police officers was hired to kill you
but enough about radical extremes ..
lets start with another pontless subject created by me .. just because of this stupid sibject of games and violence …
“i played the spongebob sqaurepants game” and it made me want to kill my cat … oh wait that could really be logically i guess .but the comedy value is still there
October 11th, 2006 at 8:06 am
I played Yoshis Island, and now I want to swallow all animals to see if I can lay eggs (I haven’t laid any eggs yet though)
October 11th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
I played Killer Instinct, next thing I knew I did an ultra on my mother. 132 hits in under 10 seconds, the last hit more or less put her in orbit
October 11th, 2006 at 8:20 pm
i second that .. whats better than yoshi doing it .. i suppose playing it whilst high
“i played hitman and now i shoot postmen for money”
October 12th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
