PS3 Launch Titles Announced

October 20th, 2006 by Kevin Cortez in Driving

ps3 boxSony has officially announced its PlayStation 3 launch lineup at their 2006 Gamers Day event earlier today. On launch day in the US, November 17, over 21 first- and third party launch titles will be available, including Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 3. Regarding pricing, Sony said that “most titles [are] expected to retail under $60.”, once and for all refuting the rumors of $90-$100 PS3 games.

It should be noted that the games will be released during the “launch window”, and won’t all be available on November 17.

    I must admit that is a decent amount of launch titles and actually to be honest their launch titles are better than the 360 launch titles. I don’t think the 360 had 20 games either (it was 18 I believe and MS was bragging about having the strongest launch line up ever … well O have to admit they just got one-uped by Sony)… I can’t remember but seriously most of them absolutely sucked and were not next gen in the least.

    * King Kong
    * PDZ
    * GUN
    * NFS Most Wanted (it was okay but not all that)
    * NFL ‘06
    * Quake 4
    * American Wasteland
    * Live ‘06
    * Ridge Racer 6

    Yeah … it really looks like Sony owned MS on this one … but then that is the gamble you take when you launch the first next-gen console a little early. Crappy ports and games that in no way can be considered next-gen. Sony is beginning to come on strong at the right time. I am impressed by this launch line-up. They just have better and more entertaining games at launch than MS did.

    Maybe there is something about that saying “good things come to those that wait”.

    But I am still going to wait until I can play some PS/3 games to give a semi-final verdict (early in this new race) on who I think really is winning this next gen battle of graphics. Since I am extremely visual and I don’t mind saying that for me GFX are the most important part of a game (though the genre and mechanics still have to be to my liking for me to actually sit down and play it).

    Hey…I loved Gun and King Kong, though I beat Gun in less than 2 days and King Kong in less than 1 week. I agree with you on the MS lineup though.

    As for the graphics being the most imporant part of a game, eh…Gameplay first. That’s always for me. I don’t mind buying some crappy looking budget game, just as long as it’s fun.

    Remember, “launch window”, a launch window is anywhere from two weeks to two months (Xbox360 was one month, I think)

    Really Jim … I thought the window was until the end of the year … wasn’t DOA4 still considered a launch title because it made it on before 2006?

    Even so though this is still a better launch line up than the 360 … maybe not a great launch line up since there is no UT2K7 or KillZone or MGS4 but still it is a good solid start. I don’t know why anyone would really complain … especially if you only play PS games and not 360 ones like Oblivion for example.

    I am talking about launch line-ups, not xgen games vs ygen games, that is not my point … of course launch lineups will always be compared no matter who came first. How do you NOT compare launch line-ups when MS was bragging about having the best launch line up EVER? Who were they comparing their system too then? All I am saying is that if I look at both launches and see who has the most fun titles available for their fanbase at launch and I feel that the PS/3 beat out my own beloved 360. It’s just my opinion but Sony can claim to have the strongest launch lineup ever as well … and I think they are actually more on point this particular time.

    Are people saying that MS will always be one gen ahead of Sony as far as games so you can’t make comparisons … how crazy is that? Within an 18 month window they will be at about the same point … heck maybe even sooner considering how many multiplatform ports there will be over the next year.

    Of course the real issue is how many of said 21 titles will actually ship before the end of ‘06? That will really determine who in reality did better on their launch.

  8. John frew Says:

    If sales fail to materialise due to console over pricing, then these titles will flop and they’ll be NO 2nd wave, except from Sony themselves.

  9. lionzub Says:

    Great launch list… if you like sports titles…

  10. Anuban Says:

    “Within an 18 month window they will be at about the same point … heck maybe even sooner considering how many multiplatform ports there will be over the next year.”

    I said this earlier and just wanted to add this will also be determined by how quickly game devs get fully up to speed and comfortable working with their respective SDKs. Once that happens the real differences between the PS/3 and the 360 as well as which one is the more satisfying platform for the most visually immersive gaming experience, will be answered definitively. All this nonsense that MS started about 1st and 2nd gen next gen games (confusing huh?) can go away and people can just say which next-gen game looks best.

    And incidentally when is this next-gen going to become current-gen … next year? Are we going to go through this same crap the next time a console is released? You can tell that I am sick of all this “xGen this and xGen that” crap … marketing crap which should stay the helloutta gaming. ‘New’ console and ‘better’ games would have sufficed imo. Is the term ‘next-gen’ really pushing console sales … you see my point?

  11. marquee Says:

    Yup xbox still has better games coming into this year and next, again there is still no need for a PS3 maybe sometime in the end of 08 to beginning 09.
