Sony Defends Lack Of Rumble In PS3 Controller

October 27th, 2006
ps3 padMany gamers were clearly disappointed when Sony announced the new PS3 controller, albeit having motion controls, it lacks a rumble features, something that was common in every controller on the market. Sony’s Phil Harrison said to Eurogamer

“I think that the next generation interfaces that can be created built on SIXAXIS motion sensitivity give tremendous gameplay benefits that far outweigh a reactive vibration function.”

Maybe Sony would have included the rumble feature if it wasn’t for all the trouble they had with Immersion over the PS2 controllers, but Harrison defends that by saying the six degree motion sensing far outweighs the rumble feature.

“The vibration function is the game sending a single channel of feedback to the player – six axis of input puts the player in control in a much richer, deeper way. So, game design can go in much more interesting directions as a result of that than from receiving a single input from the game itself.”

As always, costs play a big part. Already featuring motion sensing and wireless Bluetooth connection, Harrison pointed out that since they’re making 150-200 million of these, “it has to be done at price”.
