Nintendo Wii Causes “Wii Elbow”
The Wall Street Journal recently published an article detailing various reports of soreness caused by the Wii. It appears as if some overzealous gamers get so into their games that they have begun to develop an ailment playfully known as “Wii Elbow.”
Even though Ryan Mercer is an avid weight lifter, he says that after playing Wii Sports, shoulders and arms ache from exertion. He went on to say, “I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe — I had to go take a shower,” referring to one of his gaming sessions.
Later in the article, the WSJ talked with various physicians about treating “Wii Elbow”. Here are the doctors recommendations,
Stretch out and be sure to take care of any injuries afterwards. “It’s just like athletic play,” says Lana Kang, an orthopedic hand surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Ms. Haefele, who along with her fiancĂ© is also a gamer, has been heeding that advice. Last year, she suffered a tendinitis injury and started wearing an elbow brace. Now, she also wears it when she plays the Wii.
