No PS3 For Korea

On December 4th, 2006 in Uncategorized -

The PlayStation 3 has launched successfully in North America and Japan so far. However, there is no sign from Sony Computer Entertainment Korea, and the PS3 still doesn’t have a release date for the Korean market. The PS3 has been released and sold out in the US and Japan, and Europe will be seeing a release in March 2007. There is no indication or even any plans to bring it to Korea so far.

The reason? Profit, naturally. We already know that Sony is losing money every time a PS3 is sold, and while 1 million PS2s were sold in Korea, only 1.9 software titles were sold per console. The PS2 was also sold at loss of profit. Sony’s main marketing strategy relies on selling game titles, so there will definitely be a problem. Piracy was also a present issue. Although the PS3 has a miserable software ratio of 0.9 in Japan, it is expected to rise when more console are available.

Nintendo has already launched their Korean division, and the Xbox 360 is seeing growing sales. Korea has one of the largest gaming audiences in the world.
