It had to come at some point. In-game advertising in one of the oldest online shooters out there, Counter-Strike 1.6. Valve’s Doug Lombardi confirmed that in-game advertising, served by IGA, will appear in CS 1.6, and in CS:Source later on. He spoke to CS-nation about the ads, where he said,
“There will be some ads posted on walls in the game world, an ad on the scoreboard screen, and one in the letterboxed area of Spectator mode. Counter-Strike levels aren’t going to turn into Times Square or a Nextel Cup racecar. We have control over what ads show up in Counter-Strike and how they are presented.”
Counter-Strike is rapidly losing ground to more modern shooters like Battlefield 2, and this appears to be the worst Valve could do to the existing CS community.
Of course Valve defends it by claiming this decision was made together with the community, but that’s pure BS. No CS player would like to see in-game ads appearing all over the place. And let’s face it, just like any other game company these days, Valve follows the money. The little time I have for CS these days will certainly get lost to another game.

1Vavle was one of those game companies I respected and liked. No we get this bullshit? As soon as the ads hit, I’m uninstalling CS and re-installing BF2. We did it for the community”. WHAT?! A load of bullshit
Fuck Valve for what it’s worth.

2I fear Epic will soon follow suit. Can you imagine in-game ads in Gears 2 or UT2K7/UT2K10? Although I appreciated HL2 a great deal Valve was never one of my favorite companies … still this is pretty hard to swallow.

3JIM2k hit it on the head of the nail man i had 2 respects for companies and they made the best games well game.ID software and valve, i bragged bout them to ppl saying they make games like we want them to.It took doom3 four years and had me and millions of ppl getting angry everytime they delayed it.When it was done it was a masterpiece, with half life 2 i started to realize well just now.Valve is different in its ways, it wont release crap cuz it only has hl2.Not css, dods, mods im talking bout a game that sells on the market is half life. They shouldve gave us an option to have the gay loads and such.Im making my own company trying to find programmers to start off making mods and getting r feet wet.Back to where this started movies r doign this too.just saling the name and no quatily at all. This is retarded man bf2142 does ads for the duo lol and it made me buy it cuz i wanted it before so everytime i saw it im like im gonna get that! But it was on a billboard so it was realistic how r u gonna do this on cs.U have millions millions of players the 2nd best game in the world as of hours.I never thought valve would do something like this man.Right now id software is the only company that started this whole gaming whole to 3d shooting and will never die,cuz they know hows its meant to be done.Make a product cuz ur proud of it,so we can play it and love it and and not go man when quake wars comes out im done with this game.im really disappointed valve, really disappointed.

Though it won’t change the gameplay. I guess people will just spray over the in-level ones.

5Wickerman if you are serious about doing mod work then I suggest you get your hands on UT2K7 and start there. There is no bigger modding platform with a large community as there is the UT series. The UE2 engine which drives UT2K4 is very moddable … I know believe me … and modding with the UE3 is going to be even easier and more fun. Join the UT community and hook up with a mod team … there are plenty. I will be starting up a new mod group myself for a project under UT2K7 … not a continuation of HaloUT but a whole new original IP. Maybe if you learn some UScript or how to develop levels you can join my team. If you ever want advice let me know. I’ve been part of the mod scene for two plus years.

7I will never support in game advertising. A part of the reason I enjoy playing games is that there isn’t any advertising, it’s free of that commercialist crap.
*HOWEVER* One way advertising would not leave a bad tast in my mouth is if it was done in such a way which wouldn’t take away from the experience eg. empty cans of coke littering a city map or a mars bar wrapper blowing around.
I doubt we’d see this sort of integration though as it’s a bit to subtle for advertising ppls to agree to use.
As for Valve’s use of in game advertising, I’m a little worried. I don’t play CS but if this spreads to other online MODs I won’t be at all happy. I wonder if the “community members” the asked were the CS Dev team.

8I will definitely need a level designer when UT2K7 comes out as well as a concept artist and graphics person, and someone who has some good ideas and can tell a convincing story. Really you should take a look at my mod HaloUT for UT2K4 (well it was the whole TEAM’s mod but I was the Project Leader responsible for pretty much everything) … it is all over the web no kidding .. be sure to get the 1.751 version at the very least … I believe the HaloUT community did some extra work to bring it up to 1.752 once I permenantly left the project but I lead it from 1.0, 1.5, 1.75, to the Community Extras Pack so we did manage to accomplish a great deal under the Project Torlan-Project Nexus namebrand.
I am really looking forward to a 100% new mod project with some fresh new blood and a totally original story so yeah we will keep in touch. If you know others who want to do a UT2K7 TC mod then start talking to them and tell to be ready to start moving forward once it is announced when UT2K7 is out and the demo is released. It is going to be a VERY exciting time for UE3 modders.

9I don’t have a problem with Valve installing in-game ads…But ONLY if they provide an option for the customer who has already paid for their product to disable them.
Otherwise I’ve given Valve the last $$$ they will ever see from me.

10It seems to me that this could easily be bypassed, via an admin plugin replacing the ads with server themed pictures, having the server block the ad urls, or playing another mod similar to Counter-Strike. Frankly, I don’t see why Valve needs in-game ads in Counter-Strike, since the only thing utilizing actual money is their non-effective anticheat software, and providing lackluster updates.

December 10th, 2006 at 12:12 am
11Ok, lets break this down. Valve is not selling any more units of counterstrike. It doesnt cost you anything to download their updates and play on their infrastructure. If CS is to stay around, there needs to be some way for Valve to make money. Its either this or a subscription fee… Which would you rather have?

12People already use sprays to advertise porn sites they get affiliate cash from, so this is just a more legit way of doing it. It will not detract from the game, and anyone who quits playing CS because of a few ads needs to wake up and realize this is not the free internet of 1994 anymore.
Kyle
December 10th, 2006 at 12:26 am
13Ditto.
Those servers you’ve been playing on for free are costing somebody something to operate, own, and maintain.
The valve steam update servers (which give you your free updates) cost money.
Paying people to write those updates (which you get for free) costs money.
How are those bills going to get paid without _seriously_ nixing the community? BINGO… innovative online advertising.

15Grow up!
“We did this for the community.”
Because without money, no servers, means no community. CS has been around for a long time. Revenue from game sales has probably dried up… so unless you want to start paying user fees, you should stop whining.
It can be done tastefully. Adding an ad to the bottom of the loading screen would hardly break the experience, and a few (but not all) of the levels could include billboards in an unobtrusive way. Given my choice, though, I hope they shy away from putting any adds in the actual levels.
But other than that, it’s a perfectly understandable business decision for a long running franchise that collects no user fees.

18Who gives a crap if there are ads posted on the wall? If they had put up fake ads already you fags would never complain. It does not effect the game. Let them make a few extra bucks, it probably means the next games will be even better. There is nothing to complain about.

19Given Valve has millions of users and those users can d/l any of their payed-for games multiple times I suspect their bandwidth costs run 7 figures a year. The base problem is they let you d/l ANY game you ever bought to ANY PC you want…so you can have CS:S on all of your PC’s…you can do this three times a day if you want too. That costs a lot of money and if Valve wants to recoup some of that so what? We see advertising EVERYWHERE…on TV, on HBO (watch for placement adds…they are everywhere in movies), driving to the store, in the store, in the newspapers, on every single web site you ever went too…it’s the nature of the beast. There is no such thing as a free ride and if you think that’s because of “the man” or “selling out” grow up and smell the greenbacks…the worlds runs on money and this is no exception.

22Honestly people need to grow up. You’re seriously going to stop playing a game becasue they toss up a few ads? If that’s the case you might as well not be playing anyway because you don’t seem to care about the game much anyway, just it’s ad-free environment? What kind of bullshit arguement is that anyway, you play a game to get away from ads? wtf. CS sales have slowed seeing as most people that have ever wanted it have it, let them make their money so they don’t turn belly-up mk?

23lol @ valve needing to do this to keep the community going. Most bs i ever heard.

24Of course I will Zac … we had one for the trailer and it was not original but it was cool … also I had two people, Lopar-XL and UnrealGrrl who are well known in the UT community doing voicepacks.
Here is a list of the people who particpated. I am known as Exodus in the HaloUT community. Captain Valor was the actual founder and co-lead for a while. He had originally brought me on as the QA Manager.
“Developers/Technical Assistance: EvilEngine, Qx9, UbH, Slaughter, UT2004 Addict, Xabora, Dandel1984, porkmanii, 717, Oxygene2k, Mark Jansen (the original developer of Halovehicles), Magnum76, Brandon, Arcadia Vincennes, UnrealGrrl, Whistling Cool, Dace, robo422, [^..^]Apo, Zenodey, LoparXL, OutlawSkot33, HereticElite, DJ-Unowned, Disposable hero, Sjosz, Zio, Mematrix, Klasnic, MarZer, Cirion, Slip777″
This is a project I am very very proud of and also why I really like Bungie and MS so much because they knew for the full two years what we doing and gave us their blessing albeit not in writing … as long as we didn’t rip any Halo 2 content from the Xbox (I knew an MS employed xbox marketing rep so that helped out a GREAT deal) … and you can see why now since they are releasing halo 2 on Vista. Sadly the team that was working on a Halo RTS got the dreaded C&D letter once Bungie/MS decided to announce Halo Wars.

I can picture it now: Big, top floor office building. Inside: well clothed twenty-somethin executive, sitting in a nice leather chair. A senior looking man who exudes seriousness walk up, and shakes the young man’s hand.
Do they REALLY thing ANYONE will be pleased by this? What target market are they trying to reach?!

30Again all I can say is Epic won’t do that with the PC version of UT2K7 … that is for certain … the modding community for UT is extremely large and I know they wouldn’t stand for it and Epic is really about pleasing the modders seeing we help push their product and their engine. One GREAT example is Red Orchestra which started out life as a UT2003 mod. I know because I installed the very first beta. But I never got into the gameplay … still look at how they are doing now. From a mod to a full blown UE2.5 based game which is growing in fans and support.

I’m not one for being one of the first to announce a mod. I’ve seen far too many fail before they got anywhere concrete at all. But yes I will be more than happy to listen your ideas. 33if it means that playing is still free and that the games’ updater and creators of the game get paid, what is the problem, at least we aren’t forced to pay money every month to play like other games. Stop your whining people you have more ads reading a newspaper or on trains and buses, yet you keep using them… stop being so dramatic about these things, surely you have the mental capacity to look past the ads and ignore them!!

34That is not the point … as you yourself said we are bombarded by these damn companies everywhere we go. As gamers MOST of us thought we’d have a place like a refuge … free from there invasive behavior. MOST of us DO NOT want this when we HAVE to deal with Ads on a daily if not hourly basis. That is the point. Not that we aren’t intelligent enough to look past them … the point is we should NOT have to. That is all I am going to say on the topic.

35I play CounterStrike for the game, I will continue to play and ignore the adds. I’m certain people will create maps like de_dust2_noadds that are the same exact maps without the advertisements, and the ingame scoreboard is customizable. There is going to be a way to get around the advertisements, if they force the adds on the community they will respond by finding ways to get around them.

37Counter strike is a free online shooter. once all the games are sold how to you pay to maintain it? i dont like ads but eventually all the money they make from the game will run out b/c of paying people to maintain the game. its either they charge us to play (like world of warcraft), or they put in-game ads which kool server gurus will figure out how to disable.

39Well valve needs the money too…
Give me more updates that i do not want
Make more bad updates like dwp
Break more server mods
Break more server redirects
Find new ways to come up with updates to ram down my…
Reasurch new and creative ways to make the game worse
Find new excuses not to fix the net code
Pay people to make sure the net code is not fixed
Possibly make the net code worse
Develop HL3
Develop a worse anti cheater program…
Wate i ment better?
To pay for content servers to host and send all the above and more things that i do not want with the exception of HL3
ok so maby they did not need the money but some one said something about the servers that host the game:
I host two servers one currently ranked 18th in the US and climing, I am also planning on buying two more servers and adding more slots to my big one.
I am 100% sure that valve will not give me a penny for hosting their bs adds
I am also sure that i will do anything i can to get them off my servers
I am even conserdering hiring the guy who does custome programing work to make a mod to remove the adds.
I am wishing that valve would fix their net code and anti cheat
I am also wishing that they would stop breaking all my servers with stupid updates that have only the purpose of breaking the server and all of it’s mods.
Lastly I wish valve would leave the game alone. It was a great game back when it was made, so was chess and that has not been changed…

If the game play is the same then who cares, they are the level designers they had to build the levels, they should be able to put what ever they like in them, yes even ads.

47Valve doesnt really listen to the community, i can appreciate the broken game thing, but look at Blizz and Starcraft, theyre still going. Sometimes there are Ads in B.net, but we get over it. The server gurus will probably be able to block them anyway.
And about those updates every week, every time we get one, both our match servers, and our gungame server, are broken. Now we all have to put cl_restrict_server_commands 0 into console or autoexec.cfg before we can even use gun game or mani admin. How precisely is that listening to the community? Everybody said that DWP was stupid and price of deagle would go up loads, and its now unbuyable, but did they listen? noo

You say this was unexpected? Look at what “Steam” client is. It is one big ad. Even if you look at steampowered.com you’ll see games that don’t have anything to do with valve at all. If you remember them putting all these useless games such as Darwinia, Rag Doll Kung Fu… And worst of all Pop Cap games. Don’t even give me that BS about “Steam” being a client that is sopposed to bring up games.
To the in-game advertisements, who gives a crap. How will it affect you? You’re not going to be running down a corner and a bilboard will give away your spot. You all are a bunch of crybabies. Besides, every company is doing this.

49hey pink blow me man, one steam is a great way to get games for ppl that dont like cds or dvds.I just dont like EA games, its not giving or positions away.It morely it feels they dont care for their work anymore and just making money.they make so much money.HALF LIFE alone sold like 200 million copies probably in the 400 millions with the xbox and pc.You have so many games and gamers over the world.this company has billions off of 1 main game, id soft made like millions in the hundreds of millions.I see a trend, look at EA lol they are perfect. They sale products that arent done yet like bf2142.That game was so far from being done, witht the servers crashing randomly everytime a round ends usually 3,where ppl can jump through wallz, where u can take squad beacons and spawn in reactor cores, boxes so we cant kill him, where u can hover over a titan and get 26,000 points in 1 round.Okay do u see my point?Madden 06,07 wasnt even completed.EA owns valve now if u guys didnt notice look at the css and dods thingy case it says ea games too. This is y im complaining, im afraid ea is screwing up the gaming world at this point theyre way to powerful.U cant kill them now they own crytek, football rights,valve,dice.. 4 companies in the 10top of the best most played games.it goes like wow,madden,css,bf2,bf2142,cod,cod2.Ohh btw someone said it cost companies to make servers???? no it doesnt ppl buy the servers u moron.I should know i had a cal and had to pay 300 bucks for a 64 man server.

Anyways, I think IGN is the devil in respect to video games. They are going to change the way games are viewed and for the worse in my opinion. Damn them to hell!

57i dunno im still amazed in doom3,and counter strike source.I was a cal player, made lots of money on prizefights.Kinda like a clan scrim but u dont lol know ur teammates. How can u lose money tho,ppl like me and u buy servers i bought a server we buy them.Valve doesnt buy anything at all for the multiplayer servers.Valve is cheap people y do u think it s so easy to hack css.Vac is garbage, punkbuster detects so much easier than valve does. And btw EA does own some of Valve JonP i did do my research di ck.The ads dont bother me its them turning out like EA that bothers me.Bf2142 im fine with, real life billboards have ads so im down with that.Plus theyre adding intel not madden or something.I just wish for once not just crytek or id soft would be proud of what they make/made and be happy instead of greedy.LIke half life 2 was okay but they re always bout the money,i watched them and i was right. One they didnt build their engine for half life it was a quake 2 modded engine.2 half life 2 was on a quake 3 highly modded engine which they built off of.And i know ur like fu ck that it looks like to good and etc.Id soft helped build that engine just like cod,moh..Where im going with this is a 6600 or even a 9600 ati card can play doom 3 on high with the 6600 on max settings. There was no reason that half life 2 shouldve had load points every 5 mins. You know what thast is?its targeting the poor gamers too? thats sad, theyre lucky they had css and dods they bought from hs kids

58As soon as this happens user numbers will drop massively. People don’t want to be force fed that shit for something they’ve paid for.

59This could add more realism as long as it’s done right, like those stupid waterfresh vending machines are retarded pepsi, coke, etc would be so much more realistic..

60well this is one of the oldest gaming companies i mean i been playing cs since i remember the more the people to come in and play new members its fine with me and u alrdy own the game so dont fuckin bitch about them putting in ads to help out the damn gaming world people like me want to see cs 1.6 get more people to play its boring to see servers empty in pubs and there are barely anyone who likes to scrim 1.6 anymore i mean when source came out 1.6 started to vanish when 1.6 came out 1.5 died i mean honestly leave them be i support it.its kool and all.

61Who cares? O no, 4-5 realistic ads in a realistic game setting? Assaulght will feel more real with billboards, as will office and a few others. Valve will use the ads right, theyll make sure there in good spots.

63yea i agree with dan i mean come on its valve dont stop playing b.c its just ads, i mean cs 1.6 is prolly the only one that has the realistic feel of guns and grenade effects in it…coming from the military point of view.

64ok seriously.. you guys are getting butt hurt over nothing…those who are butt hurt prolly play at their house 24/7 with no social lives.. i believe those would be the only people getting mad…..and second a business is created to make money tards. Im sure none of you would ever runa successful business on account that you are all big babies and would not want to make money fromw hat i see. the people who agree with me here are smart people and not because i said this but because its just commen sence.

66I have my word now. Valve had done a super disappointing thing, but no one can stop it and i know u are no saying that u can stop it. Just society is growing faster and you have to understand that there is no way. Money is like a power now to people, well thats what really life is about money. This is, because everybody in this fucking world have there head stuck up there ass and they dont give a shit about anything. It just disgraces me that one day we will figure out that we were wrong for all what we have done the past what ever years or so.
I hope i could of got something through your guyes head. and remember to always stand up one by one and you dont know maybe something will happen one day, because i am.
so have a great day and dont get mad at anybody all i have to say is LIFE.
