PS3’s Football FPScapades
The big three new football titles this year, Madden NFL 2008, NCAA Football 2008, and All-Pro Football 2K8 are both being released on the Xbox 360 and PS3, although there is one big difference. The good folks over at 1up have been able to confirm that these three titles will be running at a solid 60fps on the Xbox 360, while being locked at a sluggish 30fps on the PS3.
When Sony was contacted about this, Dave Karraker, SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications responded with the following thoughtful comment:
“If you have questions about specific third-party games, you should speak to those publishers.”
For a company that has been suffering from quite a few PR issues as of late, this probably isn’t the attitude you should take over an issue like this.
“We want to make sure that we give the best experience we can on each platform. In designing a game, there are all sorts of tradeoffs that include frame rate, visuals, features, AI, etc. Football is an extremely challenging sport to replicate because of the number of people on the field, their interaction, and the scope of the environments. As you can see, every company making a football game this year made a decision that the best experience for the Xbox 360 included 60fps whereas the best experience for the PS3 was 30fps. We certainly believe that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are our football products are outstanding experiences and recommend that each gamer look at the entire experience, not just one aspect. We think they’ll be very happy no matter which version of the game they play.”
One could wonder with the growing concern about the difficulty on developing for the PS3 if that has indeed had something to do with this fps problem. Nevertheless, with that said, we have no confirmation at the moment on if the PS3 versions of these games are getting better specs than the Xbox 360 versions in non fps related areas. For all we know, there could be graphical enhancements the PS3 is getting that is results in the choppy frames per second rate. However if both are in fact identical aside from this fps lock, I think there are going to be some rightfully upset PS3 owners.
