July NPD: New Sales Leader, PS3 Price Drop
NPD data for the month of July is finally available, seeing as we’ve nearly wrapped up August it’s been a long time coming. Before you let out an audible sigh however, note a lot was running on this month, and a few expectations have been blown out of the water, as well as for the first time in a while, a new top seller.
July marked the month of E3, big game announcements, and most importantly, the PS3 price reduction. PS3 sales are up, not surprisingly, but a lot was riding on just how high they managed to increase. Many analysts were calling for the PS3 to at least overtake the 360 in July thanks to the reduction, but the results weren’t so cut and dry.
We also know the Wii has overtaken the other consoles for worldwide sales, but it has also managed to take on it’s biggest competition, Nintendo own product Nintendo DS, and given it a solid beating. With average weekly sales of the Nintendo Wii over 100 thousand in the US alone, it seems as if production on Nintendo’s end may have finally increased, but given the huge amount of sales, will they even be able to touch the demand requirements? Read on to see the thrilling (as thrilling as sales can be) charts for July.
Wii 425 k
Nintendo DS 405 k
PlayStation 2 222k
PlayStation Portable 214k
Xbox 360 170k
PlayStation 3 159k
Game Boy Advance 87k
With the PS3 unable to beat out the 360, it’s all to certain that things will remain as they are probably for the rest of the year. The 360 has since received both a price drop, and has quite a few major titles that have or are releasing in the coming weeks. We are now back to the age old question, does the PS3 need another price drop?
