PS3 Enters World Records

On November 2nd, 2007 in Uncategorized -

The PS3 may not be as commercially successful as the Wii or Xbox 360, but it can brag about its entry in the Guinness Book of World Records! The records-recording organization has recognized the Folding@Home initiative as the world’s most powerful distributed computing network, to which the PS3 is a major contributor. The network currently has more than one petaflop of computing power – the equivalent of 1000 trillion calculations per second.

The addition of PS3s has seen the aforementioned surge of computing power in the network. Previously it had around 200,000 computers, the equivalent of about 250 teraflops. However, the addition of 670,000 PS3s has taken the computing power of the network to more than one petaflop. In comparison, BlueGene L, the world’s most powerful supercomputer, has a top speed of just 280.6 teraflops.
