PS3 Getting DivX Support

On November 13th, 2007 in Uncategorized -

In an announcement today, DivX said that they will be adding their software codec to the PS3 in the near future. DivX is a very popular encoding format used for movies, and the company has recently released an online version of the codec. It is unknown when the feature will be implemented in the PS3, but considering that the latest update (2.0) was released a few days ago, it is unlikely that we’ll see it anytime soon, probably early next year. Hopefully Sony will also implement Xvid support, the main rival to DivX. Xvid should be easier for Sony to use, as it’s free and open source. With those two codecs, and perhaps Quicktime as well, the PS3 could become a serious powerhouse of a mediacenter.
