Nintendo Producing 1.8M Wiis/Month, Pushing Developers for Unique Games

November 16th, 2007

Nintendo of America’s marketing head, George Harrison, recently sat down for an interview with Next-Gen where he gave some details about Wii production and how the future of the console looks. According to Mr. Harrison Nintendo’s factories in China are producing 1.8 million Wiis every month which is still falling short of demand worldwide. When asked how the shipments were being divvied up, he reported that they analyzed market performance to determine where they’d be getting into the hands of the public as fast as possible. He also addressed the complaint of many ‘hardcore gamers’ that most publishers are pumping out a series of mini-games wrapped in a thin story coatingĀ  in order to take advantage of the Wii’s massive and continually growing customer base who are often looking for more casual games. Mr. Harrison said that many third party developers are less hesitant about creating games for the Wii as the worries about it being a flash-in-the-pan fad are definitely fading. He went on to say that Nintendo is encouraging developers to use the intuitive control scheme to come up with interesting, unique games. With games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Mario Galaxy setting a bar for third-party developers to jump for, it seems the future of the Wii is still bright.
