Sony: PS3 Could Be Profitable Next Year

January 8th, 2008
Sony is currently losing a heap of money on the PS3, $ billions, but that was the plan from the beginning, as consoles, sans the Wii, start off by losing a lot of money. Sony’s Kaz Hirai was quoted saying at CES that they expect the console to be profitable in the next fiscal year, starting April 2008. He cites lower production costs — like 65nm process and removal of backwards compatibility chips — to be the main reason.

“The next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing. We are going through the budgets right now. That (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for.”

He also mentioned that games were the main attraction, the main reason people would buy the console (doh!), specifically mentioning the MGS4 exclusivity.
