Uwe Boll Attacks Gamers, Internet Critics

January 25th, 2008

With a whole slew of terrible movies under his belt which were only able to be made because of a German tax loophole, Uwe Boll has come under frequent attacks by critics both in print and online and also by gamers in general. On a segment of “Red Eye”, a program on Fox News shown at 3am entitled “The Brilliance of Boll”, the infamous director was interviewed and had many inflammatory things to say. Amongst his comments were that people on the internet have no lives and substitute instead their time spent on the internet. He also insisted that gamers who complain about the changes in his storylines need to ‘get a girlfriend’. His complaint against more well-known critics is that he makes ‘genre films’ that don’t appeal to those types. Since when did film critics hate a movie just because of its genre? Movies like the Die Hard films, the first couple Alien films and many others are perfect examples of ‘genre’ films that are quite amazing. Uwe Boll is essentially that annoying friend in Halo who always insists on driving the Warthog because he enjoys it, and then drives you straight off a cliff every time.  Simply because you enjoy something, doesn’t mean you’ll be any good at it.

Uwe Boll also critiqued video games, citing the thin plots as the reason his films haven’t done well. My challenge to him is this: try making a movie about a video game that does have a plot. I’d love to see him butcher a KOTOR, Bioshock or Deus Ex film.
