September 7th couldn’t come soon enough, especially now that it seems very likely that will be the date Spore finally hits, after years of delays and silence. The hype for the title seems to have been quickly reborn, after media outlets were invited to Maxis to preview the current and near final build of the game.

For the rest of us however, stuck waiting several more months, Will Wright brings some information worth getting excited about. The Spore creature creator, which he feels is really the heart of the franchise, will be made available for free before the release of the game.

“I might decide I want to just buy the trading card of my creature, or other things we might attach, and never buy the PC game,” he said. “So in some sense that free creature editor might become the hub of that franchise. The PC game is just one of the big spokes off that hub.”

Will is obviously of the opinion that the creature creator will in fact find its own huge success, and that this franchise will take off in a very Sims like fashion. People will be so into it he hopes, that they’ll be doing everything from creating plush toys to animated shorts. I guess we’ll find out if it really takes off in such a manner, but one thing is for sure, free never hurt anyone.
