Coming out of nowhere, Gamespot reports that the open-world action title Prototype has been delayed to an unspecified 2009 release date. The game was originally set for release this Fall.

“Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create,” said publisher Sierra Entertainment on the matter.

The game is being worked on by Radical Entertainment, the development house behind the excellent Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction game. The studio recently revealed that if there are sequels for the game, then they will add co-op gameplay to it, something that was omitted in the coming title since they want to focus more on single-player content.
