Sony: PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 in Europe, 8 Million PSN Members
At the company PlayStation Day press event in London, Sony highlighted its success across various platforms, revealing that it has sold 12 million PSPs, 48 million PS2s and 5 million PS3s in Europe. The number of PS3s sold is said to be comparable to the PS2 in its early years despite the price difference of the two consoles.
The company also noted that it has outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe, in spite of the competitor’s lower price and earlier release to market. Kaz Hirari, president and CEO of Sony’s gaming division, also noted that the PS3 was going through ‘growing pains’ during its first year, pointing out that things have gotten better and that 2008 will be the year of the PlayStation, with games like GT 5 and GTA 4 already out, and Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Haze and more in the horizon.
Sony also revealed that PlayStation Network, the free online service for the PS3, now has over 8 million registered users, with 3 million in Europe.
