Why You Shouldn’t Use PS3 as a Blu-ray Player

Img3669_tif_jpgcopy It may not be the best-selling console out there, but it is the best Blu-ray player in the market right now: the PS3. It’s cheaper than stand-alone players, has more options and can easily be updated through the Internet to add more functionality – heck, Sony used it recently to add BD-LIVE support.

Keeping all that in mind, the PS3 has major drawbacks as a Blu-ray player in one’s home theater system. CNET lists seven reasons why you wouldn’t want this black shiny box as your next-gen DVD player in your home, using excuses such as its incompatibility with universal remotes, electricity consumption and more. 3. Interface isn’t as easy to use

This isn’t an issue for tech enthusiasts, but Sony’s Xross Media Bar (XMB) is packed with options and can be intimidating for neophytes. Although we generally like the XMB for zipping around the PS3′s functions, using a standard Blu-ray player where you just need to put in the disc and hit play is definitely a lot easier. You can enable discs to autoplay, but any time you want to adjust options you’ll have to quit back into the XMB again.

Some of the issues they raise are actually quite good. What do you guys think? Is the PS3 worthwhile as a stand-alone Blu-ray player?
