Army of Two Film Planned

On October 24th, 2008 in Uncategorized -

Film adaptations usually fail because of one thing: they can’t quite cram everything from the intricate plot line of the book, video game, etc. into the mere two hours or so a film can keep people in their seats for. That’s generally why massive liberties are taken and fans are generally unhappy.

The key to creating a truly successful adaptation is picking something you can upscale rather than trim down. It might have been a commercial success but (and please don’t hate me for saying this) Uwe Boll’s Postal was quite an amusing movie. Sure it was potentially offensive in pretty much every joke it made, but it took a relatively vague game and put a new storyline behind it.

EA is going that path with a couple different game films: the already announced Sims movie and now a film is being made from Army of Two. The film will follow a pair (surprise surprise) of ‘military contractors’ (what happened to honest mercenaries?) who get caught up in a global conspiracy. Scott Z Burns, co-writer of The Borne Ultimatum is penning the script and Scott Stuber is a producer on the title.

“Because people experience the game in pairs, playing two guys who go against the world, Scott and I agreed this format presented an opportunity to make a great buddy film,” Burns said. They are apparently aiming for a degree of intellectual relevance to the film: “The ambiguity of these private military corporations lends weight to an intelligent thriller with relevance to what’s going on in the world right now. You have contractors with their own agendas, and two guys whose friendship supersedes all the politics.
