I am something of an alternate history buff.  For those of you that aren’t already familiar with this subgenre of science fiction, let me provide some background.  Alternate history is essentially a “what if” game of history.  Basically, alternate history would ideally take one event in history—the United States’ civil war, World War Two, the Great Depression, or something similar—and change one critical portion of it.  Perhaps Germany wins World War Two, for example. Think how shockingly different the world would be if that had happened.  Or if the Confederate States of America had actually emerged from the United States’ civil war as a full-fledged nation—how different would the world be if the United States were only about half its current size?

That’s exactly the kind of question that Turning Point: Fall of Liberty will ask and attempt to answer.  Specifically, what if Winston Churchill had died, unexpectedly, in 1931?  Double bonus irony points–Churchill was an alternate history author himself, having written an essay for Sir John Squire’s “If It Had Happened Otherwise”.

The extrapolation from that point says that, without Churchill, no one was willing to stand up to Adolf Hitler’s steadily expansionist war machine, and as Hitler goes on his epic-scale land-grab, Great Britain surrenders in 1940.  This gives the Nazis the perfect staging ground for an assault on the United States, and so, they launch.

Stop and think about that for a minute—in 1940.  America didn’t actually get involved in World War Two until nearly 1942.  Before then, there had been lend-lease activities in which the United States supplied other countries with arms and munitions, and that didn’t even start until 1941.  That means that America’s industrial might is probably still trying to shake off the Great Depression, without the impetus of nearly seven hundred billion dollars (at 2007 prices) of goods being produced for use worldwide.  That means, chances are, we’re armed in World War One style while the Germans are coming over in fresh off the line gunboat zeppelins with the entire industrial might of Europe.

Oh, and the Japanese are also taking potshots at California.

So while tooling around on Miniclip, I found a new game for you guys–Under Arms. And if you’re a fan of the first person shooter, this might be one to try.

In the grandest Wolfenstein tradition, you once again take on a legion of Generic Nazis in the midst of World War II, and you’re out to collect documents scattered throughout a Nazi base.  I know, it sounds pretty similar to a lot of other first person shooters out there.

The plot is flimsy at best, and really only a justification to have you roam around a Nazi base with a variety of weapons blasting anything that walks into frame.  And the controls are a bit twitchy, too–you use your mouse to aim and your keyboard to move around, and the mouse’s aiming can be pretty sensitive.  One slight twitch can send your gun barrel swinging around from one side of the screen to another.

So really, this is not the best of games. But if you’re really fond of first person shooters and you want one for free, then you could probably do a lot worse.

witcher-rise-of-the-wolf-ps3 Developer CD Projekt claims that its action-RPG game The Witcher – having sold over 1.2 million copies since its October 2007 release – is now among the 100 best-selling PC games of all time.

"Because of those numbers, The Witcher has jumped onto the list of the 100 bestselling PC games in history," CD Projekt RED marketing coordinator Karol Zajaczkowski wrote.

The 1.2 million figure includes both retail and digital distribution sales.

The morally ambiguous RPG is based off the works of Andrzej Sapkowski. Since its release in 2007, the game saw an enhanced re-release offering better animation and more content, among other things. A rebuilt console version is due out this fall on PS3 and Xbox 360.

gta-iv-lost-and-damned No one can doubt the power of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but just how strong is the brand? Analyst Michael Patcher estimates that the downloadable expansion The Lost and Damned will break the 2 million download mark this year.

"Take-Two released the first installment of DLC for GTA in mid-February, and we estimate that the game has been downloaded over 1 million times to date," said Patcher. "By year-end, we think that this figure will likely double, giving us greater confidence that Take-Two can achieve its full-year earnings guidance."

The expansion costs $20 and is exclusive to Xbox 360. It can be bought both offline and online, though it still has to be downloaded through Xbox Live.

Patcher additionally expects the next full release of GTA to outsell GTA 4 by up to 50 percent due to larger hardware install base.
