The video games that films and television shows have been based on are often poorly chosen and seem to be picked for more summer blockbuster potential than any other reason. Generally they ignore IPs with interesting character and well-fleshed out plot lines. That might be in part because it’s usually the big film studios who seek out these projects with little actual involvement from their creators.

Bethesda however is taking a more active interest in the possible direction other Fallout media could go. They’ve filed patents for both a Fallout film and television show. With the huge volume of material already created for the series there are plenty of avenues to go down. The main storylines and side quests of all three games give dozens of possible storylines; defeating mutants, questing for parts to fix a dying vault, etc.

The only problem of course would be the high cost of doing a Fallout TV show, with the budget for special effects, props, buildings, etc. Unfortunately a film probably wouldn’t do the well crafted Fallout universe justice, but I doubt we’d see more than a season of two of the TV show.

sacred2logo Following word that the game had gone gold for consoles, Sacred 2 developer Ascaron Entertainment announced that it has filed for bankruptcy protection and is now in “negotiations with several well-known interested parties to discuss a positive takeover.”

“After four years developing Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, an extended development delay made it necessary for Ascaron to go into administration,” the studio explained. It noted that the development team is currently working on an expansion as well as a sequel.

The company will temporary continue operations though it is incapable of repaying its debts.

"Due to the protection offered by German administration rights, Ascaron intends to use this as an opportunity to secure the future of the company," the company noted.

Sacred 2 players need not worry, as the servers and services for the game’s multiplayer modes are unaffected and will continue as usual.

God had ordained today to be the day when we gamers could dance to disco and stomp around on the map as a giant Stalin. But alas, it was not meant to be: Stalin vs. Martians has been unexpectedly delayed until later this month “due to the long march across the Siberian tundra.” Damn you Siberia!

"A dictator is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to," said Mezmer executive producer Tom Soderlund.

The game is described as an “arcade RTS” and is said to be the “perfect choice for anyone who just hates the strategy genre.”

Below is a video from the game. You know you want it! Now, disco!

You’ll soon be hopping about on your Royal Bengal Tiger, as CDV has announced that the Xbox 360 version of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel has gone gold. It is set for release on May 12.

Released on PC last November, the action-RPG game features a massive open world to let players roam about and kill the native fantastical creatures for loot. Talk about poaching!

Quite conspicuously, the PS3 version wasn’t announced gold, but that version is coming out on May 12, too.

Someday in the future grandparents will gather their children’s children close around a glowing LED and regale them with tales of the gaming boogeyman, Jack Thompson. Every evening he swooped out into the night and devoured precious copies of video games and consoles, leaving a grim pallor of boredom in his wake. Yet one noble judge slew the beast with a flaming pen of justice.

Unfortunately the dark forces of the American legal system permit even the most insidious of individuals some hope of redemption. Jack Thompson was disbarred for life from the Florida bar association after a long and illustrious career of harassment, questionable tactics and paranoia. Unsurprisingly he vowed to fight this decision from the very beginning, but now there’s finally a capstone on this chapter of the story.

Today the US Supreme Court was given the option of hearing Thompson’s case, which they ultimately declined. Thus ends any recourse Jack Thompson has of practicing law again short of passing the bar exam in a different state.

I’ve got to hand it to Sega, I really do—they’re trying.  While their efforts aren’t always successful, they’re at least taking a run at things, and that says a lot for them.  And their recent release, Sonic Unleashed for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii, shows that they’re at least making an effort.

Again, not always successful, but again, an effort.

So once again, in Sonic Unleashed, Sonic is taking on his old nemesis Eggman, who must have some really deep pockets because this time he’s managed to assemble an entire deep space fleet of heavily armed attack ships to go after Sonic.  Naturally, it doesn’t take long for Sonic to turn them into hulls with massive holes in them venting atmosphere into the big empty that is space.  But the gigantic space fleet was just a gigantic distraction, as Eggman uses Sonic’s presence, and the Chaos Emeralds that power Sonic these days, to charge a weapon that manages to shatter the planet below and yet NOT kill everyone on the surface.  But this incredibly unlikely event also releases a beast known as Dark Gaia, whose power Eggman covets for his own to construct his dream empire, Eggman Land.  This in turn launches Sonic and friends into a whole new globe-spanning adventure in a bid to, once again, defeat Eggman and return Dark Gaia to its prison.

This is a whole lot of storyline, and you’ll be seeing it build throughout the game through lots and lots and lots of talking.  Occasionally, you will be allowed to participate in action sequences, but these action sequences almost feel as if they KNOW they’re being ignored, so they try to pack as much as possible into themselves.  It’s a lot like that old Mad TV sketch—I’m pretty sure it was Mad TV—where the divorced father gets custody of his son for only a few short minutes every six months, so he tries to do everything possible while in the confines of the small apartment he calls home.  There’s an impromptu birthday party, he teaches him to shave, and so on right down the line.  That’s what Sonic Unleashed feels like—you’re with your boring chatty mother three hundred sixty four and ninety-four / ninety-sixths days of the year, so when you’re with Dad, suddenly it’s a frenzy of activity before Mom takes you back.

Your head is left spinning by the sheer speed of Sonic’s daytime mode, and at night, as part of a weird unintended consequence, Sonic turns into a “werehog”, which is much large and musclebound than the original hedgehog, but also much slower, so these sequences are largely brawler action.  Also, you’ll get to ride on the back of Tails’ plane, the Tornado, and work the guns in a largely unimpressive button mashing sequence made all the more frustrating by the fact that you’re required to press buttons that appear on-screen, but generally won’t appear until it’s ALMOST too late to do anything about it.  So unless you couldn’t get enough of playing Dance Dance Revolution with your controller, you’ll hate these sequences.

And that’s the really sad part about this—I did have a lot of fun during the “dad’s time” action sequences, but I found myself so neck-deep in “mom”’s ridiculous chatting that I just got bored with this game.  If you can stomach a whole lot of chit-chat and like some pretty sweet action sequences, then Sonic Unleashed should be at least worth a rental for you.
