Tech news outfit ArsTechnica claims to have a reliable tip from an insider, who suggests that Microsoft will do away with the Xbox 360 Pro SKU and replace it with the Elite, while still retaining the same $299 price point. The Elite is essentially the same SKU, but with a 120 GB hard drive instead of a 20 GB one.

This is supposedly to counter a move by Sony, which will indeed release a PS3 Slim (everyone knows this), which will be cheaper than the current PS3 SKUs.

Both of these rumors make a lot of sense, if you’re looking to buy either a PS3 or an Xbox 360, we’d suggest holding off for a few months and get a better deal.

I know, it’s something of a non sequitur and a pun all at the same time, but basically, when they say Point Lookout, they mean, look out.  Because for some reason, they’ve stuffed some serious baddies in that swampy ground, and it’s not going to be easy to get through.

This time in the greatest first person shooter that man has ever known, you’ll board a riverboat bound for Point Lookout, Maryland (which is, apparently, an actual place, unless I’m being hoaxed.  This is possible as I’ve never been to Maryland, but a cursory net search suggests that there really is a Point Lookout) with a goal in mind before you even get off the boat–to find a young woman’s missing daughter.  Of course, once you’re actually in Point Lookout, you’ll discover that there’s an incredible opportunity to be had here, as there’s virtually no one in sight when you actually get off the boat.  You can loot as you please!  And there’s PLENTY of loot to be had here–you’ll walk into a mostly abandoned seaside town / amusement park complex where there’s only one person, and she’s tending a shop.  But right away, you’ll notice there’s something very wrong with Point Lookout, and it’s not just the psuedonuclear shambles that every other place in the Capitol Wasteland is.  The Point Lookout motel contains scenes of horror even a raider would shrink from.  The Pint-Sized Slasher even makes a bit of a reappearance (he’s not just a newspaper blurb any more!) and the secrets, lies, and mysteries contained in that swamp are more than you could ever imagine.

There’s all manner of new equipment to be had here, but most of it is a little on the mundane side.  An axe, a shovel, a lever-action rifle that fires 10mm rounds and a double-barrelled shotgun will all make appearances, as will simpler things like workman’s coveralls and a Confederate cap, which is somewhat ironic as Maryland was a border state that leaned heavily toward the Union with only a few dissenters.  In fact, a whole LOT of Point Lookout seems to be done in that antebellum style of the Civil War-era South.  The huge manor houses, the relentless bayous…a lot of it just screams Louisiana.

Now, just so you know, I didn’t go in there cold.  I had recently reset my character to get the full experience back when Broken Steel came out, so I was a bit behind, but I took the riverboat at level fourteen, with the full loadout from the Project Anchorage vault.  I had my Chinese stealth armor, I had my Gauss rifle and a laser rifle with plenty of microfusion cells, I even had a Gatling laser, and I was getting chewed up at virtually every turn.  I don’t know how these “swamp people” who seem to have no more armor than their overalls are managing to absorb metal pellets fired at near-relativistic speeds when I’m blowing away Enclave troops in powered armor within three hits with the same hardware.

That’s about my only real gripe here–Point Lookout is some amazing fun, even if I do need to bring the equivalent of a light armored division or maybe Liberty Prime itself just to pacify the populace.  I love the darker tone and the subtle infusion of horror gameplay, something that game companies should definitely take note of.  Imagine this game with ZOMBIES.  And I’m not talking ghouls, but actual zombies.

One thing, however, remains crystal clear–Fallout 3, and by extension Point Lookout, is still the best action RPG I’ve ever played.

Japanese cartoons are often full of upgrades, secret levels of hidden power and groups of robots coming together to form one huge, all-powerful robot. In that spirit Japanese gaming powerhouses Tecmo and Koei have merged to become one omnipotent company hell-bent on destroying the world. Well, not destroying the world so much as selling tons of video games, but some conservatives would argue they’re the same thing.

The merger has begun with the European branches, with Tecmo Koei Europe waving at the world from London, fish and chips in one hand, controller in the other. The first title that’ll be undertaken by this new corporate being is Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. We’ll be seeing a demo for the game some time in September this year, with full details of when they hope to release it coming in July.

ArmA 2 (Armed Assault 2) had a somewhat troubled launch, as the game was, to put it mildly, filled with bugs. Developer Bohemia Interactive has already patched a lot of those, and they have today released another patch for the game.

Although this time it doesn’t focus on bugs, but rather on the visuals, as the new update, according to the developer, “increases visual quality significantly without any major performance impact”. The patch, also known as 1.02 build 58134, is an updated version of 1.02 which was released last week.

Sony has released a silver version of the PS3 controller, also known as the DualShock 3. While not as cool as the Japanese ceramic white controller, it still adds some flavor to your PS3 controller collection. The new controller carries the same price tag as the regular black one: $55.

Video game movies are usually a big swing-and-a-miss, often because they’re either based on games with sub-par plotlines (Doom) or games where they throw out the well-crafted plot in favor of their own take on the story (Hitman, Resident Evil, etc. etc.) tossing in unnecessary elements and generally doing a ham-fisted job of things. While gamers generally groan at every announcement of another adaptation, most of us are crossing our fingers behind our backs and praying that for once they’ll get it right.

Most recently picked up for potential ruination is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Following the adventures of rough and tumble adventurer Nathan Drake on his quest for fame and fortune (of course) the game’s existing plot has plenty to offer for cinematic entertainment; interesting characters, an unfolding adventure with plot twists and betrayals, a romantic subplot and plenty of action. The film has been picked up by Columbia with Kyle Ward writing the script. Ward is already writing scripts for Kane & Lynch and Hitman 2 films so if he gets this right he could be considered the avatar of the video game gods on earth, struggling mightily against the Hollywood infidels to ensure that these stories are told in all their majesty.

Who would you like to see play Nathan Drake? The obvious choice being voiced by many is Nathan Filion of Firefly/Serenity cult fame since he’s already demonstrated his ability to play a snarky-talking, pistol toting badass, but I’m sure there are plenty of other options out there. I

If you’ve been following the happenings at Midway you’ll know the company is in dire straits,  facing bankruptcy following the failure of Wheelman to pull in the money they needed to keep things going. Recently Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment swooped in with a $33 million dollar offer to acquire most of the company, including of course the Mortal Kombat franchise, undoubtedly the only reason to really put up the cash to acquire the company.

Larry Kasanoff has filed a lawsuit on behalf of himself and his company, Threshold Entertainment claiming that in 1993 Midway granted him the rights in perpituity to the film and TV license for the series. Unfortunately for Kasanoff the clauses in his contract don’t actually grant that; his argument says that they ‘amount to the same thing’. He goes on to claim that Mortal Kombat is much more a product of Threshold than Midway since they claim that the characters in the video games were simply flat, stock archetypes who were developed into actual characters by the production company in the various films and tv series. That of course ignores all the inconsistencies between the depictions of the characters in their films and television series, not to mention that the film takes a certain degree of  story-related artistic license. In the film both Kano and Shang Tsung are killed, while as established in game canon by Mortal Kombat II (released two years before the film) Kano was a captive of Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung was still living.

DICE has finally launched Battlefield Heroes, the cartoonish, browser based free online multiplayer shooter. The game was originally scheduled for launch last December, but an extended beta and development time meant it’s available now.

The game will be monetized by in-game purchases and advertising, but is otherwise free to play. You can check it out on the official site.

It looks like Modern Warfare 2 isn’t the only game Glu will be developing for mobile handses as it was recently announced that the studio will also get their hands on Blur, Guitar Hero 5, and Tony Hawk: Ride.

There are absolutely no details regarding gameplay for any of these games but we do know that they will be released this year for Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, and Java-based handsets.

Anyone excited? I still don’t understand why they aren’t releasing these games for the iPhone.
