Modern Warfare Reflex review
The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was an instant success when it was released two years ago, but Wii owners were left outside of all the fun, and when other consoles are enjoying the success of Modern Warfare 2, the Wii is still on the outside.
Not any longer. At least when Modern Warfare 1 is concerned. Modern Warfare Reflex is the Wii-port of 2007s Modern Warfare, and it sets to deliver, or rather, emulate the same experience that Xbox 360, PS and PC owners had in 2007. Did it accomplish that? Sort of, but not without issues.
The obvious additions to the Wii version are the new controls, and the obvious setback are the visuals. Most of the game is largely the same, it’s the same campaign as before, however, played through with the new controls, it somehow manages to feel new. It helps if you haven’t played through the Modern Warfare single player campaign in a while though. It also means the campaign brings with it the bad stuff from before, most noticeably: it’s very scripted and linear. But if you know Call of Duty, you know it’s too be expected. Also, it’s just as short as before, but again, it’s a port, so it is to be expected. However, given that it’s been over two years since the release of the original, a little extra content wouldn’t have hurt.
The controls are fairly decent and follow the formula of other Wii FPS games like Metroid Prime 3. You also have some help with the controls, as your aim, or cursor, will automatically point at an enemy of it’s near them when you aim down the sights of the gun. It helps with the control, but it leaves a slight feel of “noob” about using the feature, as it doesn’t seem to go well with the flow, as your gun will often “snap” on enemies, and then, for some reason, snap back. Which usually means you’re gonna die very soon. On the bright side, there are a ton of options where you can customize the finer details of the aiming controls.
One of the main additions not just to a Wii game, but to the Wii console as a whole, is online multiplayer. Yes, finally there is a decent online multiplayer game out on the Wii, over three years after the console was released. The online multiplayer is based on the tried and tested Modern Warfare 1 formula, and it works great. You still have all the same features, unlocks, rankings, perks and so on. The Wii version has even more game modes, and is, hands down, by far the best online multiplayer game on the Wii.
Visually, the game is rather bland and are far from the original game, but that’s what’s expected of an underpowered console like the Wii. The visuals still hold up to Wii terms, and will rival most other games on the console. Production values are great, but there are a few bugs and glitches — more than on the previous version, which should’ve been ironed out before the release.
The Good:
Good campaign
Awesome multiplayer
Good overall port
The Bad:
Short campaign
Control issues
A few bugs and glitches
Overall score: 8/10
