Serious Sam HD review

January 11th, 2010
Simple. Gory. Fast paced. Fun. Those were the ingredients of Serious Sam when it was released a good 8 year ago, and it brought back old memories of Quake and Doom. Today though, first person shooters are a lot more complicated and realistic, but luckily, there’s something in store for those just looking for some fun.

Serious Sam HD is the same game as was released years ago, now though, it features HD visuals, and while they’re not gonna stack up against Crysis and Gears of War, they’re still good enough for you to want to revive the Serious Sam shooter. The gameplay is still just as fast, gory and over the top as before, and the improved visuals only make it better. However, on the audio side, there are noticeable shortcomings, the biggest of them is the fact that the game still features the sounds samples from the old game, which sound quite crappy today.

Furthermore, there are graphical and technical glitches in the game, so much that it should actually have been a beta release or something, because it’s got a tendency to ruin the gameplay some of the time. Which consists of hordes of enemies running at you at almost all times, we’re talking hundreds. Constantly re-spawning. The action is very intense and you don’t have much time to relax — but that’s the way it was intended, this isn’t a tactical shooter, it’s pure madness. However, mowing down enemies in the thousands does get repetitive, as you might expect, because there isn’t much variety in the game, besides all the different enemies and the tons of guns you can use to kill them.

Multiplayer is present in the HD remake, in form of a co-op mode, but unfortunately, it’s not all what it’s supposed to be. In fact, it just throws a bunch of human players in the missions. Same objectives and all, just a few more people to kill the foes. It feels rushed and uninspired. Worst of all, the HD remake doesn’t feature anything new, no new guns, enemies, levels. You’d think after eight years they’d have a few more ideas and additions to the game, but unfortunately; no.
In all, the game can be recommended for fans of the original one, but even at $20, it’s not as cheap as it feels it should have been. $10 seems more like a fair price, and if you’d like to check it out, you’re probably better off waiting for a discounted copy.

The Good:
Fast, intense gameplay
Good humor.

The Bad:
Bugs and glitches
No new content

Overall score: 6/10
