When Nintendo first announced the brand new 3DS everyone rolled their eyes at the thought of walking around with those ridiculous 3D glasses on. However, after they announced that you won’t be needing those 3D glasses, people started to pay more attention. And, ever since, people have been wondering how exactly Nintendo is going to pull it off, but Hitachi has a solution for them.

What you see above is a diagram showing how their 3.1″ IPS LCD display works. Apparantly, there are slits in the actual LCD that make the image appear 3D without requiring you to use the glasses. Other specs of the screen include a resoltuion of 480 x 854 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1.

There’s no telling if this screen will actually appear in the 3DS but considering Nintendo has worked with Hitachi in the past, we’d say there’s a pretty good chance.
