Perfect Dark, the spiritual successor to one of the finest FPS games in history, GoldenEye, was released back in 2000. And in is own right, Perfect Dark was a worthy successor. Finally, developer Rare has created an updated version, and since Rare is now owner by Microsoft, the game is available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
First of all, the game features updated visuals, but that’s about it regarding to stuff that’s updated. It still sports the same campaign, same characters (led by super-agent Joanna Dark) and the gameplay is pretty much the same as well. If you expect to be blown away by production values — which are nothing special — you should look elsewhere, because Perfect Dark isn’t meant to find new audiences, it’s meant as a flashback of nostalgia for the fans of the original game, a good 10 years ago.
Perfect Dark follows protagonist Joanna Dark though various missions around the world, where she completes tasks and kills lots and lots of baddies with an array of weapons. And there’s multiplayer, and that’s about it. This time, multiplayer is carried online as well, in addition to the regular split-screen mode (which is just as fun). However, the online component tends to lag quite a bit, especially when all player slots are filled up.
While the online multiplayer is a welcomed addition, there ancient controls mechanics, level design and gameplay elements pale in comparison to today’s games, and Perfect Dark certainly won’t win new fans with the remake. But as said earlier, it’s not meant to get a new audience, it’s meant for those who played the original on the Nintendo 64. Some of the aspects that would’ve been improved but weren’t are the audio and voice over, which is quite horrible, to say the least — especially the voice acting for the protagonist seems out of touch with the character. But this was the case back 10 years ago as well, and if you’re interested in reliving some of your old memories, your $10 are well spent with Perfect Dark.
The Good:
Great chance to relive old memories
Still fun
The Bad:
Feels very dated (but nostalgic)
Online play lags
Overall score: 8/10
