Nintendo has high hopes for the 3DS: despite the steep $300 price tag, they expect to ship 4 million units in this fiscal year, which ends in March 2011. On the downside, the company downgraded its profits outlook, where it previously thought they would do ¥200 billion ($2.39 billion) in profits for FY2010, but now expects to earn about ¥90 billion ($1.08 billion).
Ubisoft has announced that one of its most memorable titles, Beyond Good & Evil (which still hasn’t a sequel?), will be getting an “HD” upgrade with high def graphics in a re-release on the PlayStation Network ad Xbox Live Arcade. The game will reportedly run in 1080p and have achievements on trophies as well. The game was originally released to great reviews and sales in 2003, but Ubisoft has yet to announce or reveal a sequel.
Nintendo turned some heads when it announced that the 3DS would retail at 25,000 Yen in Japan, which translates to $300 — quite a lot for a hand held. US analysts, including game analyst Michael Pachter, expects it to retail for less in the US and Europe, around the $250 mark. Which would be better, but is still quite a lot, and it would still cost more than a Wii. Which is kinda odd.
Nintendo has announced the launch details for its upcoming 3DS, and the 3D capable hand held will launch on February 26 in Japan at the crisp price of 25,000 Yen, which translates to $300 — making it the most expensive hand held Nintendo has ever made, and the most expensive console they’ll be selling at the time (as the Wii retails for $200). It will be available in two colors, “Aqua Blue” and “Cosmo Black” (pictured above). Furthermore, Nintendo has revealed that the 3DS will sports 2GB of internal storage for apps which can be downloaded. 2GB doesn’t seem like enough for a $300 machine.
Playing sports games, especially basketball, has always been better with a controller as opposed to mouse and keyboard (unlike FPS games). If you’re looking to get that extra bit out of your controller, you might be interested in a pair of “Hoops Freek” controller nubs, which retail for $10. It actually seems like a nice piece of gaming gear, however, $10 seems like a bit of an overkill for a pair of rubbers. You can get yours here.
Great Britain’s largest game retailer, GAME, has announced plans to close 85 stores across the UK. However, it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, as the stores will close over the next 3 years, and will still leave GAME with some 550 stores in the UK. The closures are a part of a cost cutting measure, which will eliminate under-performing stores.
