Unlike EA Sport’s NBA Live series, they actually appear to know what they’re doing with the NHL series, and NHL 11 is no different. In fact, it might just be the best hockey game ever made.
If you’ve played last year’s NHL, NHL 10, you’ll think there aren’t many differences after booting up this year’s version. For the most part, the game appears to look and sound the same, but the similarities are all gone when it comes to the little things. And some big things too, like gameplay and physics. When you’re on the ice with your team, the game looks almost like watching a game on TV, and that’s not just the great graphics, it’s the way things move around, the fluidity of the gameplay, how every player on the ice feels realistic, even if he’s in the far corner of the screen, seemingly “minding his own business”. Overall, the attention to details is amazing. As for modes, teams, and multiplayer, it’s virtually the same as last year. What of it is different, is different for the better. The AI, which still isn’t perfect, is a lot better than last year as well.
The controls and gameplay are spot on, and nothing ever feels scripted. You can score goals in a million different ways, even by accident, just like it happens in real life. The physics are impressive, the way the puck and players behave and interact always seem natural. However, there are drawbacks, the biggest of which isn’t actually a part of the game: it’s the nickle and diming EA has been doing to its sports titles. If you want to be a part of the extensive online component, called UHL — Ultimate Hockey Team — be prepared to spend some cash to get a decent team.
Overall, hockey fans will find the most extensive and polished hockey game to date with NHL 11, with great gameplay, style and visuals. The AI can get a bit repetitive when it comes to the plays it makes, but overall, it’s not a big issue. The fact that you have to pay to get the full online experience kinda sucks, but it’s almost expected from EA these days. Also, we’d wish there were some new modes, as all the others have been ported from last year.
The Good:
Great gameplay
Stunning, life like visuals
Realistic without being boring
The Bad:
AI has some bugs
Have to pay for full online experience
No new game modes
Overall score: 8/10
