One of the surprising games of 2008, albeit with its flaws, was Mirror’s Edge from Battlefield developer DICE. The game didn’t sell well, but definitely established a solid foundation for a possible franchise, and DICE has always said that they plan on doing a sequel.
However, according to a new report, EA was given a demo of Mirror’s Edge 2, and apparently wasn’t satisfied enough to approve it for production. Instead, they insisted DICE spend their developers and time on Battlefield 3 — which pretty much the entire staff at DICE is working on now.
Previously, EA was considered to have put Mirror’s Edge 2 on hold, but now it appears that what was in development before was canned completely, and that when/if work resumes, it will be from ground up. The future of Mirror’s Edge 2 looks a lot more uncertain now.
Ubisoft’s latest quarterly report shows that the third game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood has shipped 6.5 million units, and while that doesn’t mean it has sold as many games, it’s an indication that there’s a lot of demand for the game, and sales are certainly going well.
This fares well with the sales of the previous Assassin’s Creed games, which each sold around 7 million units to date. For more on Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, check out review of the game.
Sony has proudly announced that its best selling PlayStation 2 console has surpassed 150 million units shipped since its introduction in late 2000. While 150 million seems like a lot, it’s nothing compared to the games available on the PS2: there are currently 10,828 titles available on the PlayStation 2, a number which is surely to reach 11,000 by the end of this year. And game sales? Try 1.5 billion games that were sold on the PS2 to date.

Michael Bay’s Transformers series has been immensely popular with each movie putting up high box office sales. However, on the video game front, things haven’t been so strong in terms of Transformers movie tie-ins. Regardless, Activision is looking to push ahead with a title that will coincide with the release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and will also maintain the same name.
If you want to give this game a look you’ll be happy to hear that Activision has just released a Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailer which we’ve included for you above.
No release date has been announced for Transformers: Dark of the Moon but it will be out for the Xbox 360, PC, Wii and Nintendo 3DS when it does hit store shelves.
In the gaming world there is a lot of focus on titles from bigger studios but once in a while there is an independently developed gem. Minecraft is a perfect example of this which took a seemingly very simple concept all the way to surpassing 1 million sales. Well, another game that’s been in the press a lot as of late is Magicka from Arrowhead Studios.
The basic premise of this game is you’re a mage who needs to use various elements, combining them to make various spells making for a very creative and innovative game.
Well, the game is doing quite well as it has already surpassed 200,000 units sold. Not only that, but Arrowhead has also taken the time to let us know that they are planing both free and premium downloadable content for Magicka in the future. Unfortunately, not much was said as to what exactly will be included in these DLC packs but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
BioWare is a big name in the gaming industry with heavy hitting titles like Mass Effect. Another popular franchise being developed by the studio is none other than Dragon Age. Currently, EA and BioWare are prepping to launch Dragon Age II and have just recently announced that the game has gone gold. In other words, Dragon Age II has been finished and is being sent to the printing press.
While Dragon Age II won’t officially be out for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Mac on March 8th, you will be able to check the game out in depth on February 22nd when a demo is made available.
If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that an early build of Crytek’s Crysis 2 had leaked out. This had to have come as devastating news to both EA and Crytek considering the game’s March 22nd release date is so close. Of course, true fans of the series will most likely hold of on pirating the game in anticipation for its full, polished release.
However, what such folk may be intrigued to see is a 25-minute video of Crysis 2 gameplay. Considering this is uploaded to YouTube, it probably won’t be long until the video gets taken down due to a copyright claim from Crytek. Additionally, those who don’t want any spoilers won’t want the check out the video as it does go through part of the game’s story.
Of course, no matter what, we don’t support piracy but the amazing gameplay featured in this video will serve as some hefty publicity for the game.
Internet piracy is becoming more and more of a problem for just about every company involved in selling digital goods including the music industry, movie industry and, unfortunately, the video game industry. If you’ve been paying attention the most recent big name leak came in the form of Crysis 2 when an early build of the game found its way onto some high profile torrent sites.
Today, another similar leak has surfaced this time in the form of Killzone 3. That’s right, a beta build of one of Sony’s biggest games has been leaked and is now available for download on torrent sites. While you’ve probably already made up your mind over whether or not you’re going to download it, a high profile leak like this is sure to attract a lot of attention from Sony meaning this most likely isn’t the safest thing to download.
Not only that, but illegally downloading a game prior to its release probably isn’t the best way to support a game studio.
Sony came forward not too long ago to show off their second generation dedicated portable video game console codenamed the NGP or otherwise referred to as the PSP 2. This device features things like touch panels on the front and rear, true joysticks, a quad-core processor, 3G connectivity and much more. Considering this is the successor to the PSP it’s to be expected that it wold phase the device out, right? According to SCE worldwide President Shuhei Yoshida, no the two consoles will co-exist with one another.
He elaborates by blaming it on the price of the NGP which, quite obviously, wont’ be priced anywhere near that of the PSP. Below is a direct quote:
“In terms of pricing, we can’t sell the NGP for the same price as a PSP. I think the NGP needs time to mature and get adopted by users. So, for the time being, both platforms will coexist.”
If anything, this vurtally confrims that the NGP will be priced out of range for most gamers. Here’s to hoping that price tag drops at a rapid pace.
