CryEngine 3 costs $1.2 million to license

ON March 16th, 2012 In Industry, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Cryengine 3 price
CryEngine 3 reportedly costs $1.2 million to license for commercial use. We’ve seen CryEngine 3 in action, and it’s absolutely stunning, regardless what platform it’s used on. Developer Crytek had promoted the technology for a while now, and it’s been available to license to other developers. But at what price?

Anyone who applies for a CryEngine 3 has to sign a non-disclosure agreement, so it makes it hard for developers to talk about how much it costs. But DigitalBattle has received a quote from a software company working with the new engine on an unspecified commercial project, and the licensing fee for the CryEngine 3 reportedly costs $1.2 million.

    BULL!

    over priced!
licensing it, means a game developed with Cryengine NEEDS to get over 1million copies.

The price is non-disclosure and the rumour price above is an exaggeration to cause a spark in discussion. Yes the engine is really expensive but I wouldn’t say 1-2 million. Though price being disclosure does make sense.

my bet would be 7k or less. But website I checked said price range for Unreal Engine 3 is around 7k:/

Anyone remember the E3 Demo footage of Cryengine? showing the real time lightening effects, much like what you see in high budget movies. With that, I can sort of agree with the 1-2million.

    THAT IS INSANE MAN!

it’s good to be rich, because you can afford these things.
1-2million to a rich man is like £10 or £20.

then again it make sense because 8th gen is going to be insane! Making games right now is already expensive, and reason why games are so short in terms of single player. Having CE3 for 8th gen will save time and money. Also CE3 is really the best and most powerful engine out there so its price makes sense, one of the best features is the development with all platform in real time which shortens development time.

Thats believable. Like the first comment says, Unreal engine 3 was about 700k which is reasonable. Next gen is probably going to be a GIGANTIC leap above what we are currently about to max out at this gen. Based on rumours and Epic Games’ claims Id say the 8th gen (Sony and Microsoft anyway) will be AT LEAST 6x more powerful and It would make sense for something way more powerful than Unreal 3 to be sat least 1mill out of the pockets of the license purchasers.

TBH I cant fricken wait for the new consoles to come out, Ive been with the 360 since February ’06 and It feels like its more than time for a new console by at least fall 2013. BRING IT ON! THE COSUMERS ARE READY

Unlikely that the license is $1.2m, regardless of what competing engines cost to license. It is, however, possible that the new CryEngine has an upfront licensing fee and a % of sales from games that use the engine that could be capped at around $1.2m – That’s not uncommon in business.

After all if, for example, Call Of Duty X used CryEngine that cost would be a drop in the ocean compared to potential income.

If NDA’s are required to learn about CryEngine 3′s licensing fees then it is very likely that the $1.2m fee is false……OR some game company has no respect for privileged information.

Is the 1.2 million for the Business (Serious) Developer version or the Independent version (probably not independent version). Either way I say it is way over priced since Cry Engine 3 has great power and graphical tools however it lacks advanced tools to actually make the games themselves. UDK independent version is only 99 US dollars and with Unreal Engine 4 coming out they are also boosting their graphical game. Engines like Unity 3d (which doesn’t compare to Cry Engine or UDK tech wise) are great because how easy and effective it is to set up complicated games the hierarchy just makes game development so simple which is lacking with Cryengine 3.

Well, with 8th gen it’s going to suck for indie developers, and on top of that I’m sick of fps games T_T. I think I might actually buy the new nintendo console, CRAZY right?
