Borderlands 2 shows the sad state of PC gaming…

ON March 17th, 2012 In Opinion, PC

Borderlands 2 PC
Gearbox, developers of the upcoming Borderlands 2, recently posted a “letter” to PC gamers about all the features that the PC version of Borderlands 2 will include. Groundbreaking stuff like “FOV slider”, “LAN support”, “V-sync option”, “PC specific UI”, and more.

In case you played PC games in the first half of 2000s, you’ll know that all those “features” were standard on even the most basic shovelware PC titles. The recent console ports have gotten so bad that these things are now considered “features”.

It’s sad that PC gaming has come to this. At least Gearbox is making some effort in releasing a decent PC version of Borderlands 2. But is a special announcement really necessary for something like “mouse smoothing options”?

Gearbox obviously did it as a joke.

Not necessarily, but at least it quells fear and paranoia of a bad Console Port. And it gives us weapons incase the stuff doesn’t show up…… *Grabs Torches and Pitchforks*

I get what your saying, but I really think this is to show PC users that they aren’t getting the short end of the stick like they normally do from console ports. Not a bad thing, and may be considered news to PC gamers that may have worried about another shoddy port job.

    Id software, crytek.

By FAR the highest aclaimed pc developers made their debut on consoles with offering the pc gamers the most consolized pc support lacking versions ever made.

Preset graphics that look inferior from their previous projects, smallish fov accelerated aiming and overall a big FUU to pc gamers.

This article must be praised, things that were required by default in the past are now extra features showing a good port and ofcourse no discussion about mods and a console in the game, simplified locked product.

In 90s and 2000s, pc games costed less than the console versions, pushed hardware forward, had ton of customization options and moddig open to gamers.

In its current state, pc versions are overpiced 60 bucks game that we have played before with no support whatsoever. No mods, no impressive graphics, no proper control settings and the same freakign console fov that seems like we gonna play the damn game from a far. Also inferior console engine.

Then you wonder why pc games dont sell and why everyone pirates, perhaps taking a look at games that DO sell, such as valve games, wicher 2 and bf3 or serious sam 3 can shed some light of what you are doing wrong.

YOU MAKE GAMES FO CONSOLES WITH NO CARE ABOUT THE PC VERSION WHATSOEVER AND DEMAND FROM PC GAMERS TO PAY FULL PRICE.

    Get your act together!!

Finally someone that I can agree with. They all claim piracy killed PC gaming. This is however not the case. It’s a lot easier to develop on consoles.

      reasons:
      consoles have set specs
      consoles have set SDK’s
console gamers are stupid (sorry to say it but it’s true they are willing to spend 60 bucks on a game where the PC version is cheaper and harder to make)

PC gaming was never this booming. Sure piracy is an issue but it’s the same on consoles. If you don’t know a friend who hasn’t hacked their Xbox360 then you haven’t got a lot of friends ;)

By now the Xbox360 and PS3 hardware is ancient compared to pc gaming. Yet we still get same crappy textures that look decent on upscaled HDTV’s from 10 feet away. Where you sit with a PC about 25 inches from your 1080P monitor. Your PC can handle the full HD textures with ease on your midrange videocard and you don’t need the shitty autoaim since you have a keyboard and mouse.

Yet all we PC gamers get are shitty conversions where half the time they don’t even bother to remove the xbox controller from the screen and still use the damn xbox buttons for input explanation.

I’m not gonna pay for shitty stuff like that. If you aren’t willing to spend at least some effort in it why on earth should I spend 50 bucks on a half ass console port which looks like a piece of shit on my PC.

Besides that they kill the mod community which includes new talent they could use. They kill LAN play and running your own server because of cheat servers possibility although they can never get ranked :(

No people the reason isn’t piracy… The reason is that they need to spend a few bucks on adding specific PC gaming related content which kills their insane amount of profitability they can generate on the consoles.

I can be quite sure that you are a console gamer, because if you were a PC gamer you would know how vital many of these options are. Take Field of View slider for example, which many console ports (99% of which are BAD for many other reasons) just don’t include. FOV is NOT a preference. Look it up and you will find out that having such a low field of view for higher resolutions is the wrong way to design a game. It also makes many people physically ill. LAN support definitely IS a feature and if you don’t think so I can pretty much guarantee you haven’t been playing games for long. LAN support has been stripped from games for years now and is very difficult to find in games. Having this option is a very welcome feature for every gamer I’ve ever met. Not having the ability to turn off mouth smoothing in a PC support is also (like FOV) the technically wrong way to go about it and it’s also very annoying. Mouse smooth is *&@# and aggravating. Having it on is like dragging a mouse cursor weighted down by a wrecking ball. Any PC gamer knows most of these features mean Gearbox IS listening to what we WANT. If you don’t know that you aren’t a PC gamer. Pure and simple.

Also if you think PC gaming died when Halo came out then you’re retarded. PC gaming never died. It’s been diseased by terrible console ports and the dumbing down caused by console gamers retardedness. Nothing more.

    “no impressive graphics,”
“games that DO sell, such as valve games”
you are so far up your ass that you dont realize the hypocrisy in your comment?
valve games are some of the least impressive graphical games on pc.
    PC ELITIST ALERT!

Why would anyone take the sequel to a game like Borderlands as a representative of PC gaming? Use something like Battlefield 3 or Star Wars: The Old Republic instead of an obvious cash-in. Who wants to take bets that half of the above features are only available through ini edits/console commands?

Well, imo, developers have gotten lazy with PC features. The funny thing is, the PC versions of these games are still the best versions to go with, even if they are terribly optimized (GTAIV for example). Then you get games like BF3, which is just mindblowing on PC, but mediocre on console.

Consoles are still computers…..and simple ones at that. GamePLAY is better because overhead is not as great as that required on a non-console computer. Consoles are optimized to just display graphics (with less detail), play sounds/music (with less detail), etc etc. Oh yeah, and play movies and cds.
