Many say that mobile platforms will eventually get so popular that dedicated mobile consoles such as the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PSP just won’t be able to compete. While we haven’t seen this put into full effect just yet many different mobile software developers are doing what they can to help this along. PopCap is one developer who has many different titles available for the various mobile platforms including Apple’s iOS which powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
One of their more popular games, Plants vs. Zombies, has managed to impress both in terms of gameplay and sales numbers but it doesn’t look as if PopCap is looking to slow up with the game just yet. Just today, PopCap sent out a message via Twitter letting us know that Plants vs. Zombies will be coming to the Android mobile platform at some point in the next couple of months.
Seeing how Android has grown to be one of the most used mobile platforms this is sure to boost sales of the game dramatically. We’ll have to wait and see how things turn on.

The various mobile platforms currently on the market have become so successful that some analysts have said that they will eventually go on to phase out dedicated mobile consoles such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. While we’ve yet to see such a thing happen it’s no secret that platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are becoming quite popular with hit titles such as Angry Birds.
However, the developers of these platforms aren’t looking to slow their revenue creating abilities just yet. In fact, it was just announced today that Google will be giving Android users the ability to make in-app purchases at some point next week. In other words, if you’re playing a game that requires something like energy that replenishes over time (a la FarmVille, CityVille, etc.) you will soon be able to waste money on refilling that energy bar without ever leaving the app. Oh joy!

As you’re sure to know the various mobile platforms have been gaining a lot of traction in the mobile world. In fact, some have even went as far as saying mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android will eventually phase out dedicated mobile consoles like the PSP or Nintendo DS. While this has yet to be seen, it’s no secret that these mobile platforms are effectively a gold mine for big developers and independent developers alike.
Square Enix seems to be very well aware of this announcing today that they will be launching a new smartphone focused studio dubbed Hippos Lab. Unfortunately there are virtually no details as to what exactly this new studio will push out but they have apparantly started working on March 7th.
We’ll keep you posted as more information is made available.

As we’ve said many times in the past Rovio’s Angry Birds has largely been the most successful game made for a smartphone platform of all time. Sure, there have been several hard hitting competitors that will look to take some of the hype away from Angry Birds but as of yet this hasn’t happened. In fact, Angry Birds has continued to grow starting first on Apple’s iOS and expanding to other platforms like Android, the PSP and even desktop platforms like OS X and Windows.
With so many different ways to hit the consumer, sales are sure to be huge, right? You betcha – Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka recently came forth during the SXSW event to tell us that collectively Angry Birds has been download over 100 million times. Not only has its Android version seen 30 million+ downloads but even the PSP version has topped its own respective charts.
While ti seems that Angry Birds is almost getting the Guitar Hero treatment, the near future seems very bright for the franchise and Rovio.

As we’ve told you in the past; despite the fact that there are dedicated mobile consoles on the market like the PSP and Nintendo DS, mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android have been gaining a considerable amount of market share. However, when comparing the gameplay of a typical iOS/Android game to a Nintendo DS game, for example, there are some clear distinctions as more likely than not the game made for mobile smartphones will bare the resemblance to a minigame while the Nintendo DS game will feature much more depth. Of course, this is to be expected considering many smarpthone games are priced at 99 cents while Nintendo DS games are priced upwards of$30 but it’s definitely something to make note of.
Luckily, some game developers are doing what they can to change all of that adapting technology to create higher quality mobile games. The latest such of such comapnies to do such as thing is Gameloft who have developed games for just about every console on the market. Well, today, Gameloft has announced that they will be adapting Epic Game’s Unreal Engine 3 to work with future iOS, Android and PSN downloadable titles.
If you’re not well versed in these matters Unreal Engine 3 has been used to power hard hitting titles like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 – just to give you an idea of the ammunition Gameloft is working with here. While there isn’t a very solid release date, Gameloft has said that they will be releasing games 2 games powered by Unreal Engine 3 in this year with another 2 coming next year.
Any additional information we receive we’ll be sure to pass it your way.

While there are still highly popular dedicated portable video game consoles on the market such as the Sony PSP, Nintendo DS and the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS, mobile smartphones are taking the gaming world by storm. Back in 2008 Apple unveiled the App Store with the launch of the iPhone 3G which gave owners of devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch unprecedented access to the world’s largest mobile application outlet – including hundreds if not thousands of games.
Google is quickly playing catchup in the mobile gaming market with their Android platform which has itself amassed a ton of hard hitting titles such as Angry Birds. However, seeing how Angry Birds has a level cap you may find yourself with nothing to do if you’ve already beaten the game while riding the train, listening to a boring lecture or otherwise while you’re supposed to be doing something important. Luckily, PopCap has the perfect alternative for you (if you’re into puzzlers) dubbed Bejeweled.
Currently on its third iteration, it was just made known today that PopCap has been kind enough to shave $2 off the Android version’s price tag dropping Bejeweled 2 down to just 99 cents. Unfortunately, according to reports, it seems that owners of an Android powered phone running on Verizon’s network are noticing the game still priced at $2.99 instead of the reduced 99 cents. We’re not sure what the deal is here but once we find out we’ll shoot it your way.
On another note, there’s no telling how long this promotion will last so if you’re looking to get down on it you better do so fast.

Rovio’s hit Angry Birds mobile title has been in the news quite a bit lately and today it will appear once again. Seeing how Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, Rovio has taken advantage of this releasing a new edition of Angry Birds Seasons. There are quite a few different iPhone applications with more getting announced all the time. However, one that has consistently stayed at the head of the pack is none other than Rovio’s Angry Birds. While we’ve already seen special edition versions of the game that coincided with different holidays, we’ve yet to see a formal successor to the game.
Well, it seems that the developers will be doing things a bit different than one normally would have guessed and will release Angry Birds Rio based on 20th Century Fox’s forthcoming movie Rio. The game will be available sometime in March but the movie, which is about some birds attempting to escape their captors, will be in theaters starting on April 15th.
Trailer for the game included after the break.
