It’s hard to believe that the original Aliens vs. Predator was released ten years ago, but it’s true — 10 years has passed indeed. The Aliens vs. Predator Classic 2000 has been released on Steam, and includes the Gold edition and the expansion pack, and retails for just $5 on Steam. It’ll offer you some good nostalgia when the successor comes out in a month.
Despite the fact that the Alien and Predator franchises have been plagued by uninspired andpoorly executed films, the true potential of the series have been realized in a handful of exceedingly well-crafted video games. SEGA was stepping up with the noble intent of taking the bad taste of AVP: Requiem out of our mouths with a trio of titles.
Reports from SEGA suggested that Gearbox’s Colonial Marines and Obsidian’s as yet untitled Alien RPG were placed on indefinite hold in February, but it seems that hope might not be so grim. The newest Alien vs Predator game was the only title of the three to be shown at E3 this year, but reportedly that’s only because it’s the first title to be released and more news regarding the other two games will be forthcoming.
This is definitely some good news for Alien fans as Colonial Marines looked like a stunning game and the prospect of an Alien game that isn’t an FPS is quite exciting.
The Alien and Predator franchises are the biggest sci-fi powerhouses to be created since Star Wars and Star Trek. Despite the huge let-down of the long anticipated Alien Versus Predator films, the continuing battle between the vicious aliens and the honorable predators (not to mention the humans getting caught in the middle) still delights fans.
We’re now getting the first details regarding a new Alien Versus Predator game which is being developed by Rebellion, the team who created the original 1999 classic. If you’ve played either of the other two games the overall setup won’t be surprising. Its a first person shooter with a different storyline for each species, though the events of each will swirl together and inform each other.
The marine will rely on his array of fancy gadgets and weapons to help him against the more numerous and physically superior creatures, the predator uses his own gadgets and hunting skills to survive while the alien uses stealth, superior senses and sheer single-minded fury. There will also be a three-way multiplayer mode with each species battling for superiority.
The game is a multiplatform release, with versions for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 all planned to release in early 2010.

Today, SEGA has come forth and announced that a new game, based in the Aliens vs. Predators universe, is in the works. The developers behind the new AVP title will be independent game studio Rebellion, whom you may remember to have worked on the hugely popular PC game Aliens versus Predator.
“The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us,” says CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, “It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming’s most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans.”
SEGA hasn’t said anymore in terms of an official name, time frame of release, or platform the game will be on, but they assure us more information is on the way.
Press release after the break.
