Blizzard’s latest World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, has been well received by gamers (read our Cataclysm review here), and now Blizzard has revealed that the game has sold 4.7 million copies in its first 30 days on the market. On day one, the game sold an impressive 3.3 million copies, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t surpass the 5 million mark this month, which will make it the best selling WoW expansion ever.

We just told you that WoW: WotLK owners would be able to access a free 10-day Cataclysm trial but before you go ahead with that, heed this warning. World of Warcraft is highly addictive and has been known to suck the life out of many players. This isn’t because Blizzard is administering its players any drugs but because the game is so highly entertaining that sitting down for a 1 hour session could see the entire day go out the window.

Don’t believe me? Well, it seems that one player recently did the amazing feat of logging a full 149 hours in one week. For math majors out there, that means he played for literally over 6 days straight. Now that’s dedication!

I wonder if he reached the level cap with that session.

World of Warcraft is easily the most popular MMORPG in the world with millions upon millions of active subscribers. With the launch of the game’s latest expansion, Cataclysm, those numbers look to increase even more.

However, shelling out an additional $40 on top of the monthly $15 may be a problem for some users. Luckily, Blizzard has just announced that current Wrath of the Lich King owners can now access a free 10-day Cataclysm trial.

Blizzard also warns you that you need a character with at least level 78 to explore the new high level zones so you better get to leveling before you crab the free trial.

While I’ve frequently said I won’t ever be returning to Azeroth, the forthcoming release of Cataclysm has really got me considering a World of Warcraft come back. If, however, I get into the beta my chances of returning will most likely skyrocket.

Beta, you ask? Yes, MMO-Champion has recently gotten word that the Cataclysm beta is set to drop in April. Of course, there’s been absolutely no word from Blizzard regarding the matter and there probably won’t be right until the beta is ready to launch. And now we play the waiting game.

What was one a growing epidemic has finally come to an end. Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard, has recently took center stage to let us know that World of Warcraft‘s subscriber base has stood still at 11.8 million ever since late last year.

However, Morhaime doesn’t see the WoW coming to and end any time soon as he hopes the forthcoming release of Cataclysm will boost the subscriber base. Additionally, he let us know that Wrath of the Lich King has yet to drop in China so when it does that number will most likely also see a boost.

Blizzard has been working on a secret MMO for some time now and details have been ridiculously scarce ever since the project began. However, if a recent trademark filing is anything to go by we might be one step closer to discovering what the game’s title will be.

Cataclysm is the filing and was filed for use in the field of online games, computer games and paper based products. There’s no telling if this is actually the MMO’s title but those 3 fields look pretty convincing considering the MMO would be an online computre game and most likely have some sort of trading card game like World of Warcraft.
