The various mobile platforms currently on the market have become so successful that some analysts have said that they will eventually go on to phase out dedicated mobile consoles such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. While we’ve yet to see such a thing happen it’s no secret that platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are becoming quite popular with hit titles such as Angry Birds.

However, the developers of these platforms aren’t looking to slow their revenue creating abilities just yet. In fact, it was just announced today that Google will be giving Android users the ability to make in-app purchases at some point next week. In other words, if you’re playing a game that requires something like energy that replenishes over time (a la FarmVille, CityVille, etc.) you will soon be able to waste money on refilling that energy bar without ever leaving the app. Oh joy!

You’re going to have to work with us on this one because details are currently very slim — Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently t0ok center stage at DICE to tell everyone that the company will be holding an independent developer competition with “up to $500,000″ in prize money. However, Joystiq has received contrasting information that only $100,000 will be given out.

Either or, there are still no details on what the competition will entail but if any independent developers are reading this, get ready.

We saw the unveiling of the Playstation Motion Controller some time ago but it seems that it despite its introduction to the public, it’s yet to be introduced to game developers. Well, that will reportedly be remedied soon as we have just gotten word that Sony plans to introduce the controller to developers at this year’s GDC.

The event is set to happen next month but there’s no word on when the Motion Controller will be released to the public. However, with developers beginning work on games using the controller, it can’t be too long.

Naughty Dog is looking to really further the Playstation 3′s development, recently announcing that they will make the entire source code for Uncharted available to all of Sony’s first-party developers.

Evan Wells, co-president of Naughty Dog, said the following:

“We’re very fortunate to have a great group of first party developers within Sony that we’re able to collaborate with. We’re frequently exchanging technical ideas and even share some code from time to time. We’ve even posted the entire source code of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to Sony’s internal severs so that any first party developer can look through it, or borrow from it and we plan on doing the same thing when Uncharted 2 ships.”

Let’s hope that Naughty Dog’s contribution to the community will help other game developers get their games on par, at least graphically, with Uncharted.
