According to new rumors, IGN, which recently became a separate company from News Corp., is looking to sell the PC games download service Direct2Drive to GameFly. According to sources, IGN has been looking to sell Direct2Drive for a while, and it appears they’ve finally found a buyer.
GameFly offers game rentals, much like Netflix offers movies. Despite having a limited amount of subscribers — around 450,000 — GameFly has stuck around for a while and has found a niche in the market. Last month, IGN split from News Corp. and will merge with UGO, creating the biggest game site in the world.
As for Direct2Drive, they’ve been in stiff competition with Steam for years and have a good selection in games. Having D2D under GameFly might benefit both companies, as D2D also has some game rental offers as well.
Digital download distributor, and Steam competitor, Direct2Drive has opened a dedicated European online store, where Europeans can now purchase games in their favorite currency; the Euro (instead of those pesky dollars). Right now, D2D has a special promo, where Europeans can get several games at high discounts, for instance, Red Faction Guerrilla for just €12.50.
Digital distributors for PC games are giving great deals on Mercenaries 2 and Medieval: Total War 2, as both games can be had for only $5 a piece on Steam and Direc2Drive.
Steam also has the following deals:
- Medieval II: Total War – $4.99 (75% Off)
- Pirates of the Burning Sea – $5.00 (75% Off)
- Altitude – $9.89 (33% Off)
- 9th Company: Roots of Terror – $15.99 (20% Off)
- Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 – $22.49 (25% Off)
While Direct2Drive has these gems:
- Mercenaries 2: World in Flames – $4.95 (50% Off)
- Manhunt 2 (Adults Only Edition) – $14.95 (50% Off)
- Empire Earth Series – 75% Off
Direct2Drive has today announced that they will be continuing their $5 game sale to celebrate their 5 year anniversay with a whole new batch of titles that will run through this entire week.

A demo for Nation Red has now hit the web. DiezelPower Studios’ infinite zombie shooter puts you in an arena where you are pitted against several game modes with many weapons at your arsenal.
Nation Red is scheduled for release next week on content distribution services such as Direct2Drive. You can alternatively download the game directly from the official website right away.
I haven’t really heard much about this game until now, but from the looks of it, it doesn’t look bad at all.
You can download the 324 MB demo over at GamersHell.

Steam isn’t the only option for online content distribution. Who can forget about Direct2Drive, which offers some pretty good deals like today’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Deluxe Game of the Year Edition for $17.95. The deluxe version of the GOTY edition includes a bunch of DLC in the purchase, including:
- Horse Armor Pack (DLC1)
- Orrey (DLC2)
- Wizard’s Tower (DLC3)
- Spell Tomes (DLC4)
- The Vile Lair (DLC5)
- The Thieves Den (DLC7)
- Mehrunes Razor (DLC9)
If you haven’t checked this blockbuster out already, now there is no excuse. Unless, of course, your computer doesn’t meet the system requirements. If role-playing-games aren’t your thing but deals are, GRID is 50% off on Steam for the weekend.
