Bungie is one of the most iconic video game development studios of recent memory with their Halo franchise selling millions of copies and securing itself as one of the Xbox 360′s premiere exclusives. However, if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Halo: Reach is the last Halo game the studio will be producing with the rights instead being shipped off to Microsoft who will find another studio. While there will always be questions regarding the next Halo game, an arguably more interesting question (seeing how they haven’t produced a game besides Halo in over a decade) is what is Bungie’s next title?
Well, it seems that according to some reports and Bungie’s lead network engineer David Aldridge taking center stage during GDC 2011, we now know that the studio’s next title will be an MMO. There’s no telling exactly what kind of MMO Bungie will be producing but Aldrige did take the time to let GDC attendees know that the name of the game will not be WoW in space… glad we got that cleared up!
Anyways, seeing how Activision and Bungie have now teamed up for future titles, it will be very interesting to see what they’re able to come up with. A StarCraft MMO, please?
Angry Birds is without a doubt the most talked about game made primarily for mobile phones on the market. Starting out on iOS for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Angry Birds has made its way to other platforms like Android and even onto desktop platforms including Windows and Mac OS X. While we’ve known for quite some time that the iOS version is quite popular, Rovio has just went on record during GDC ’11 by saying that the Android version of Angry Birds has passed the 30 million downloads mark.
Of course, that’s not the only thing they have told us as they then went on to say that 80% of Angry Birds owners on Android download future updates of the game meaning that interest is still high even after the game is released. This goes against some words circulating in the online community that folks are growing tired of the Angry Birds franchise.
What do you think of Angry Birds? Is it still something you enjoy playing or have you grown bored of it? Let us know!
As you probably already know by now Sony recently came forward to show off their next generation portable console codenamed the NGP. This device would take off where the PSP left off and introduce gamers to a whole slew of new technology including a quad-core processor, dual-joysticks, front/rear facing cameras AND touchpads (one being a screen) along with a whole slew of other features.
While we know quite a bit about the devices hardware what we haven’t been able to pinpoint is a solid price point or release date. Luckily, it was just made known today that SCEA’s David Coombes will take center stage during this year’s GDC (which takes place from Febrauary 28th – March 4th) to speak of the NGP.
While most of the talk will be targeted towards developers we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some consumer friendly information come from the announcements as well. We’ll keep you posted.
The upcoming Game Developer’s Conference has revealed a new keynote speaker: Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who will have a keynote called “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future”. Of course, games are a bit older than 25, but Mario was released exactly 25 years ago, so you can guess where he’s getting his idea from.
But of course, Iwata is expected to take the opportunity from this and talk about the future as well, a future which includes the 3DS. Most expect that the final specs and revelations about the 3DS will happen just then.
Epic already has several successful franchises, like Unreal and Gears of War, and the upcoming Bulletstorm. Now Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski has told EGM that they play to unveil a brand new IP at this years Game Developer’s Conference. He said,
“Call of Duty was crafted by the original Medal of Honor guys. Gears of War was crafted by the original Unreal Tournament guy. I look forward to creating what’s next.”
No other details were revealed, but since it’s Epic, we expect lots of action, guns, shooting, and blood. Maybe chainsaws as well.
Did you attend this year’s Game Developer’s Conference? If so, you were part of a new record as it was just announced that the convention ammased 18,250 attendees. This is up from last year’s 17,000 making it the biggest GDC yet.
Additionally, with next year’s GDC already slated for February 28th, 2011 we’re sure to see yet another record be set.
iPhone cases range from ridiculously ugly to ridiculously awesome. This case, given out by Capcom at this year’s GDC, falls into the ridiculously awesome category. As you can see it features the iconic Street Fighter phrase “Waiting for a New Challenger” and is most likely to market their brand new Street Fighter IV iPhone game.
Unfortunately, Capcom has no plans to ever sell this case. Major bummer. To eBay!
Have you played an FPS before? Of course you have. What you may not have played, however, is the original Doom or Quake. If you have, you may know that John Carmack was the lead programmer behind both of these classic titles that really made the FPS genre popular.
Well, it was recently announced that Mr. Carmack will be joining the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto, Sid Meier, and Will Wright at this year’s Game Developer Conference as a holder of the Lifetime Achievement award.
Like I mentioned above, the original Doom and Quake are two games that helped revolutionize gaming and put FPS games in the spotlight so Carmack is definitely deserving of this award.
We saw the unveiling of the Playstation Motion Controller some time ago but it seems that it despite its introduction to the public, it’s yet to be introduced to game developers. Well, that will reportedly be remedied soon as we have just gotten word that Sony plans to introduce the controller to developers at this year’s GDC.
The event is set to happen next month but there’s no word on when the Motion Controller will be released to the public. However, with developers beginning work on games using the controller, it can’t be too long.
It’s been a while since we last heard about Batman: Arkham Asylum but with the Game Developer’s Conference comes new information about gameplay.
Showcased in the above video is what the developers call “invisible predator gameplay” which is essentially using Batman’s skillset and gadgets to stealthily take down the Joker’s henchmen.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is shaping up to be a true blockbuster but we’ll hold full judgement until it hits the shelves June 9th for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
