Capcom’s fighting game Marvel vs Capcom 3 has been well received in the press and among gamers, well enough to warrant shipping numbers of 2 million copies, according to Capcom. Of course, “shipped” doesn’t mean “sold”, but it’s a good indicator that the demand for the game is out there, so it most likely will reach 2 million units sold. Earlier this month we reported that the upcoming DLC Shuma-Gorath & Jill Valentine has been delayed indefinitely. The new DLC adds characters Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine, and will reportedly cost $5 when it becomes available — hopefully soon.

One of the more popular fighting games to hit the shelves as of late is none other than Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. If you couldn’t tell from the title (or haven’t played a Marvel vs. Capcom game in the past) the Capcom developed game allows you to choose your favorite Capcom characters such as Ryu and face off against your favorite Marvel characters such as Iron Man.

However, just because the game is on the market doesn’t mean the developers are done with the onslaught of content - not by a long shot. In fact it’s been known for a while that Capcom would get around to releasing the Shuma and Jill DLC for the game which, quite obviously, adds the characters Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine. Unfortunately it seems that the DLC has been delayed from March 15th to an unannounced date.

When the DLC does drop, however, you can expect it to be priced at 400 Microsoft Points or $5. We’ll keep you posted on a release date

One of the most anticipated games from Capcom is finally here, the third installment in the Marvel vs Capcom fighting franchise, which continues all the fun while adding new characters, some of which we haven’t seen for decades. Of course, the third installment couldn’t come any earlier, as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was released… way back in 2000. So Capcom has had plenty of time to do this right. But with 10 years of wait comes a lot of expectations, and fortunately, Capcom lives up to most of them.

If you don’t know, Marvel vs. Capcom is a fighting game which includes popular characters from Marvel and from Capcom, pitted against each other, and there’s a real comic book feeling about it, e.g. everything is over the top and nothing is taken too seriously, and we’re happy to report that the third game continues all the fun and the light tone. However, we’re sad to report that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 doesn’t really add much new besides the new playable characters. Another disappointment is that in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 there are 36 playable characters, compared to 56 playable characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Luckily, only a few characters make a reappearance in the third installment (like Spider-man), so most of them are completely new, and most of those, are quite interesting and fun to play.

The gameplay itself is fast paced just like any other fighting game, and you have plenty of moves and combos to dish out, with each character having his specialties, of course. Some of the combos are way over the top and effects are flying everywhere to a point where you’re wondering what’s going on. But in a good way. Just like in the last game, you team consists of three characters that you can switch between, and there’s an option to save your favorite teams. Another thing we loved about Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is that it records stats on almost every front, giving you great detail over everything and making it easy to track one’s progress. Mode wise, there’s a challenge mode and training mode, and that’s about it. There’s no real tournament/campaign, and multiplayer is limited as well. And since you can only unlock 4 additional characters, with the rest available from the get go, it doesn’t give much to fight for in the long run, no pun intended.

Visually, the game has a cartoonish, quasi-cell-shaded look which fits it perfectly, as if the game was taken directly out of a comic book. The sound effects are great as well, while the soundtrack is inspired by 80s Capcom games. Overall, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will satisfy most of the folks who have been waiting for a long time, but we somehow expected a bit more.

The Good:
Fun, fast paced gameplay
Great visuals
Great variety of characters

The Bad:
Limited amount of modes and variety
Fewer characters than last time

Overall score: 8/10

Usually when you pre-order things, you get something extra in return, like a little toy or an in-game item or unlock. Capcom is now offering a free t-shirt when you pre-order a copy of the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at the Capcom Store.

The game will be out in regular and special edition on February 15, 2011.

While the highly anticipated Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was only recently announced, its been kept under wraps pretty good since its development. The reason I say this is because Capcom has been working on the game for almost 2 years now, actually starting production during the summer of 2008.

We know this because the creators of the game were recently asked if the reason they are releasing it was due to Marvel vs. Capcom 2‘s success as a downloadable title. To make a long story short they responded no, we started it long before that.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be released sometime in Spring of next year.

Well folks, it is finally officially coming — What you see above is a brand new trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Unfortunately it doesn’t feature any actual gameplay but there are a ton of cinematics in addition to some appearances from Wolverine, Ryu, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and a lot more.

Now all we need is a solid release date and we’ll be set.

Ever since Marvel vs. Capcom 2 hit the Dreamcast back in 2000, people have been wanting a sequel. Sure, there’s been some rumors but there has been no concrete evidence to support that a sequel is in development. Well, we have another rumor for you but this one sounds a bit more believable considering our source leaked the entire Super Street Fighter IV roster prior the game’s release and got it right.

Anyways, Team Spooky says that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be announced in May of this year. That sounds a bit strange considering E3 is in June but perhaps Capcom wants to hype people up before the big show. We’ll have to wait and see.

Shortly after getting wind that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be hitting Xbox Live and the PSN sometime around June 29th, Joystiq contacted Capcom about Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to which Capcom’s Seth Killian responded:

The short answer is no, that’s not any part of this deal. What we’re hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there’s a lot of heat behind this, then they’ll open up the door for us to do something with 3.

So everyone, you heard the man; the more hype created for Marvel vs. Capcom 2‘s rerelease the better chance we have at seeing a Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
