Yesterday we brought you word that Capcom would no longer be developing hardcore mature rated titles for the Wii due to underperforming software sales. However, Capcom has today refuted the pervious statement releasing a new announcement:

“Further to comments made in a recent article on French website Gamekult, Capcom would like to confirm its commitment as a multi-platform developer and publisher of interactive software.”

So, while it’s not exactly saying they will still make mature titles for the Wii, it is saying that they will make some titles for the Wii, whatever they maybe.

A few days ago we learned that Sega wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of hardcore mature rated Wii titles and now it seems another studio is backing out of the game: Capcom. Why? Poor game sales.

Not too long ago Capcom was one of the premiere supports of hardcore Wii titles with games such as Resident Evil but according to Capcom exec Antoine Seux, that is no longer the case:

“Development on Wii [is] very difficult, with an oversupply [of games] and a gamer market that has radically changed. [Hardcore games] are selling less and less on the console, [be it] MadWorld or Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop or House of the Dead: Overkill. Two years ago, there were still [hardcore] gamers on Wii, [but these have been] diverted from this console in favor of the new generation. The Wii console is very much a family commitment [and] rates relatively low. So for us, Capcom, the future is the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.”

So what does the future of the Wii hold? A bunch of mini game based titles? Let’s hope not.

We all know that the Wii isn’t exactly for the hardcore crowd considering most of the games are marketed towards casual gamers. However, there are in fact some hardcore games out there. Sega, for one, has been known to develop a few hardcore titles such as The Conduit and House of the Dead: Overkill.

Unfortunately despite the fact that these games exist for the Wii, they failed to sell a lot of copies. So, this has led Sega to say that they probably won’t be doing anymore mature/hardcore titles for the Wii.

Don’t be too discouraged as this decision could potentially change as some point in the future.
