Last week the PS3 received the native Netflix app, meaning there was no longer need for the disc in order to stream Netflix movies. Now the Wii is getting the same treatment, with a native Wii app so that you no longer need a disc inside the Wii. The app is available now in the Wii Shop channel. However, unlike the PS3, the Wii cannot stream HD content. As for Xbox 360 owners, they’ll receive an update next month.

Netflix is now officially available on the Wii, after coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 quite a while ago. Netflix is now shipping the discs required to watch movies, alongside a Netflix account. However, unlike with the Xbox 360 and PS3, movies will not be in HD on the Wii.

Netflix and Nintendo has finally confirmed what has been rumored for months: Netflix streaming is coming to the Wii. The service will be available this Spring, and will require a disc in the system in order to stream movies, which, by the way, can only be streamed in standard definition, 480p. Still, better than nothing, right?
Game analyst Micheal Pachter predicts the Netflix movie streaming service to hit Nintendo’s Wii console withing a year, after being announced on the PS3 a year after hitting the Xbox 360.
However, he notes that Netflix might not be an integrated part of the Wii and PS3, because of the exclusive deal with Microsoft, meaning that a Netflix software DVD/Blu-ray drive will have to be present in the systems in order to stream movies.
