Activision has bragged about Modern Warfare 2 selling 10 million units, solidifying that franchises always rule. However, while MW2 was riding a high wave of publicity and PR, another franchise was released around the same time; New Super Mario Bros. Wii. And it instantly became the fastest selling game in Japan, and has to date sold 3 million copies there, according to Famitsu.

Count in the sales from North America, 4 million, and Europe, 3 million, you get 10 million games sold + at least half a million in Australia and the rest of the world (like Korea and China), sales pass on the other side of 10 million, and surpass Modern Warfare 2, which was always thought to be the best selling game at this time.

It’s not. The best selling game is New Super Mario Bros Wii.

NPD’s latest sales charts are out, this time for the month of November, which shows that people’s love for Mario isn’t dying out any time soon, as New Super Mario Bros. had sold 1.5 million copies for the month. Nintendo has now revealed that the sales for North America have surpassed 2 million copies as of December 10.

While Nintendo didn’t provide global sales numbers for the game, it has sold over 1 million since its launch in Japan, and most likely just as many copies have been bought in Europe as well. You can check out our New Super Mario Bros. review here.

We all remember that point in a game that made us want to scream with frustration, hurling our controllers across the room and dancing upon their shattered remains. Whether it was a difficult boss battle or simply a couple jumps you could never quite get right, everyone’s had to ask a buddy to take over or pull in some cheat codes to get past it.

This is precisely the sort of thing that frustrates casual gamers to the point where they lose interest in a game. Since Nintendo has been trying to create titles like Mario Galaxy that appeal to both the hardcore and casual crowds they’ve been forced to choose between frustrating casual gamers by making things difficult or frustrating hardcore gamers by watering down the difficulty. Their fix to this is what they call ‘demo play’ where if you’re having difficulty you can simply sit back and let the computer take care of business for you.

Miyamoto discussed this feature with USA today and it was discussed in some hazy concepts that were revealed months ago regarding the next Zelda game where players had the option of viewing the game in a cinematic fashion, only playing parts where they wished to. New Super Mario Bros Wii will be the first title to feature this, but they’re reportedly considering it for future titles as well.

What more else is there to say? Is there a soul alive that doesn’t love playing the classic side scrolling Super Mario Bros. featured on the SNES? New Super Mario Bros. Wii is sure to be a hit when it drops this holiday season.

Though many have decried Nintendo’s Wii as a mere toy or gimmick with its motion sensing controller the fact that both Microsoft and Sony unveiled their own motion-sensing devices at E3 means that at least in some facet a more hands-on style of gaming is here to stay.

Nintendo is once again changing the industry and pushing things in a new direction, but they’re still showing their love for those of us who cling to older, more simple styles of game play. Along with Super Mario Galaxy 2 they’ve unveiled another Mario game, one that allows players to do something rather unusual: play together.

In theory many of the Mario games have been two player, but not in a true cooperative sense. You’d simply take turns going through levels, sitting back and watching when it wasn’t your turn. New Super Mario Bros. Wii as it’s called changes all that. Now you and up to three friends can be jumping, smashing and stomping on screen simultaneously. Two players will control the plumber duo of Mario and Luigi with the other two playing as Toads.

Things won’t be all fun and games though, because at the end of every level the players are ranked by number of coins collected, their score and how many enemies they defeated so as you can imagine it’ll be possible to take a more aggressive approach. Players can pick each other up to save them from danger or hurl them into a nearby bottomless pit. In certain portions of the game you’ll use your Wiimote’s motion controls to manipulate the environment, which could certainly be used to hinder other players.

As always there’ll be power-ups to help you including a propeller suit which allows you to fly with a flick of the wiimote and Mario will be able to turn into Penguin Mario, which will probably offer some much needed traction on the annoying ice levels. Yoshi will of course be coming back and all four characters can ride one, but watch out- competitive players can swallow their teammates as easily as enemies. The game will be out for the holidays this year.
