With so many game developers charging for DLC it’s like a breath of fresh air when a studio like Slant Six Games comes forward and releases free DLC for a game like SOCOM: Confrontation. That’s right, version 1.60 is now available to download via the Playstation Network for free and adds a whole slew of new content and updates.

Below is a list of updates courtesy of the Playstation Blog:

New Special Forces – The Dutch KCT and Italian COMSUBIN Special Forces teams are featured in this update. Each Force is provided with two new heads, a new voice and light, medium and heavy variants of their own torsos and legs (each with a unique camouflage pattern).

New Weapons – Two new primary weapons will be immediately accessible to players who select to play as the new Special Forces. The Dutch KCT will have access to the 417 assault rifle, while the Italian COMSUBIN Special Forces will receive the SPAS 15 shotgun. Additionally, four new weapons will be made available to players regardless of assigned Special Force. New weapons include the 9mm Sub Machine Gun, M82A1A, AK-74 and SR-25.

Weapon Updates
– A number of weapon updates and adjustments to existing weapons have been included in the patch. Below is an overview of the updates and adjustments that have been made:

  • M87ELR is given .50 cal rounds to balance it against the Mercenaries’ M82A1A.
  • Shotguns are balanced to do less damage at long range but more damage at close range.
  • Grenade launchers and rocket launchers have less delay in between shots.
  • Front End weapons values are updated to reflect the new Cold Front DLC Pack weapons.

In addition to the new characters and weapons, the team has also added 100% Random Medleys to the patch update.

So, SOCOM fans, what are you waiting for? Go get it!

Developers want their beta to be popular, but just how popular does it have to be for the experience go sour? User demand was to blame for rampant problems in the recently released multiplayer beta of SOCOM: Confrontation, the PS3 installment in the series.

“Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues,” reads a statement on the game’s website. “These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all).”

They, however, are not sitting on their asses, but have actually gotten around bringing out a patch to update the game to v1.10. It adds support for dedicated servers in Europe and Australia; a number of stability and late joining issues have also been addressed.

252px-Socom_Confrontation Eurogamer reports that the US public beta for SOCOM: Confrontation has been pushed back a “few days” to September 5. Those getting in through Qore will get access a week later on September 12.

Sony asserts that the mid-October US release date is still intact, noting that the public beta will run for a full month so that people can get enough practice pre-launch.

Meanwhile, Eurogamer notes that the company is yet to set a release date for the European release of the game.

Joystiq reports that those who pre-order SOCOM Confrontation will get three beta keys, two of which can be given away to friends. This only applies when pre-ordering from Gamestop, and you and your friends will have to BFF, as the deal will be rendered void should either party decide to end the friendship.

The site notes that Sony keeps a “very strict” friends-only policy. The public beta begins September 1 for pre-orders and September 8 for Qore subscribers.
